For those who don't know kdb+ is a stream and array oriented database with SQL like query language "q" and inbuilt MapReduce. It was invented by Arthur Whitney for trading applications. My team used kdb+ when I led Quantitative Trading research fro AllianceBernstein LP. Every serious firm in the algorithmic trading space is architected on kdb+ but the skills community is still small. At Alphaxon Research LLC the kdb+ system is central to our strategy to deliver on large scale Bayes Signal Processing. Very happy to see kx systems growing the community of q-literate programmers since the system is totally fit for purpose.

Finding old Dell T-3500 workstations are great for experimentation. Pick up an old one for $100, put a SATA II SSD drive in for the OS and a $100 Intel Xeon 5500. It makes for a decent workstation you can kit out with four monitors using two graphics cards. These old Dells are quiet and have a beefy 500W power supply, six memory slots and two PCI-X. Make for a very cheap and effective trader workstation or data science rig.

Very happy to find that kx systems have made the 32 bit version of kdb+ free. http://kxcommunity.com/ This is great for high-frequency signal processing applications of all kinds.
