I've been flashing back hard to my BBS days recently while playing around in the Mastodon universe. It's probably not going to stay this way forever, but I'm seeing a lot of parallels to our old multiple systems, some highly specialised and some really general, all having a lot of big random chats.

If anyone's feeling nostalgic for back when we used to have clusters of little BBS communities having conversations back and forth across the planet, come check it out. If you're up for a chat, https://social.chinwag.org/ is waiting. Would love to see some of you on board.

So here's a thing I thought was gone. I made a photo-comic once, with a figurine of Moses and a bunch of toys I borrowed from my two-year-old child. Once again, internet, it is yours to enjoy.

We would like to assure you that we will continue to be bound by reality despite any legislation to the contrary.

Hangouts has been bugging the crap out of me for months now. I keep trying to use it and it fills me with hate. Messages I send just vanish and it crashes constantly. I'm also terrible at advocating for open standards, even though I love them and work hard at actually providing services. Here is some actual self-promotion.

I run ChinWag, an XMPP-based messaging service. It's a hobby. It's not perfect. Nothing is. However it's fully-federated and our users can communicate with every other open service on the planet. No walled gardens and we have a lovely web-based client thanks to the Movim project. It's improving and adding features every day.

As for your phone - Conversations, for Android users, is the best open XMPP client there is. iOS options are a bit on the scarce side but they exist but I have no real personal recommendations.

Get Conversations: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.siacs.conversations&hl=en

Sign up for an account on ChinWag, or any other XMPP service, add mike@bremensaki.com and say hi to me.
