Many #Kentucky #drivers have held a driver’s license for years or even decades. Like any repetitive task, driving can become a mundane and mindless activity after such a long time. But it is important for #Louisville drivers to keep their skills sharp.

Many auto accidents are caused by drivers who simply weren’t paying attention, or who developed unsafe driving habits (such as distracted driving) over years of road use. By making an honest assessment of their driving habits, Louisville drivers can prevent accidents that injure victims, lead to increased insurance premiums, and result in citations for civil or criminal traffic offenses. #SafeDriving #DrivingSkills

Research has identified factors that increase the risk of #TeenDrivers getting into auto accidents. These include nighttime driving and a high number of passengers. Because of this, many states (including Kentucky) have restricted teen driving privileges in order to address these risks. Auto accidents do not just affect teen drivers. Teenage passengers are also placed in danger, as are other road users. By restricting teens’ driving privileges, the state has enacted regulations which have been proven to reduce the risk of teen driving accidents, thus protecting all road users in #Kentucky.

A finding of negligence makes a driver legally responsible for an accident that occurs as a result of that negligence. The negligent driver must then compensate accident victims for all medical bills, pain and suffering, lost wages, property damage, and other financial losses which were incurred as a result of the accident.

Kentucky recently experienced a decrease in car accident fatalities for the first time in four years. While this is good news for all road users across the state, it is too soon to tell whether this is a statistical anomaly or a continuing trend that will improve driver safety. It is, of course, important for all motorists to continue implementing safe habits in order to protect drivers, passengers, motorcycle riders, bicyclists, and pedestrians on roads across Kentucky.

The Obama Administration banned federal employees from texting while driving in 2009. Currently, 47 states ban texting while driving. Under Kentucky law (189.292), all motorists are forbidden from texting while driving. However, there is no prohibition on other use of handheld devices.

Recently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported on the findings of a study into accidents rates in rural verses urban areas. This study reported that, in 2015, only 19% of the population of the United States lived in rural areas, yet 57% of motor vehicle deaths reported that year occurred on rural roads.
