I am pleased to report that wildly over-the-top, chest-thumping arena rock is alive and well in 2013. Here's my best shot from +MUSE's concert last night at the Bell Centre in Montreal. I wish I knew more of their music, since the songs I was familiar with were roaring great fun. Killer light and video show too. Although I am a bit concerned about how much CO₂ was released into the atmosphere by all the dry ice effects.

Excellent series of blog posts on programmers who stop learning long before they should, because they don't have enough exposure to peer review and outside influences. IOW, if you've ever wondered about the people who write the code featured on thedailywtf.com, this is a plausible explanation of where they come from.

I'm helping to organize and run a workshop in downtown Montreal for non-programmers to learn programming. If you, or anyone you know, would like to learn the basics of computer programming but don't know where to start: start here!

I'm giving away a bunch of high-class, slightly elderly books on programming and stuff. Come take your pick! (If you're in Montreal, that is.)

I've just released version 0.0.2 of Fubsy, the universal build tool (and my current all-consuming project). If you're looking for something that sucks less than Make goes faster than SCons, look no farther: http://fubsy.gerg.ca/

An Introduction to Britain from a American perspective during  WW2. Very interesting read, even for someone who is neither Britain or American :).

Slightly off-topic, but I suspect that Buildbot users are also interested in build tools at the level of Make and SCons. And I'm working on a new one. In particular, I've just released version 0.0.1 of Fubsy, the universal build tool. Imagine Make with a big injection of SCons, but faster and better, add some optimization ideas from Tup, then stir in Ant's wildcard syntax.

My midlife crisis is starting to bear fruit: I've just released version 0.0.1 of Fubsy, the universal build tool. This is the software that I quit my job to write. Lots of work left to do, but there's enough here that you can get the general idea.

See http://fubsy.gerg.ca/ for all the details.

Fellow programmers! I'm actively looking for contributors. Please take a look and think about how you can help out. Ideas, criticisms, code, vague ideas... I'm open to anything.

Anybody in Montreal have an unused DSL modem I could borrow for a week or so? Ours just died, so we're switching to a new ISP with DSL2. But it'll be a week before that's activated. In the meantime we have no internet at home and no wish to buy an obsolete DSL modem to use for just a week.
