“Putin and his entourage are simply continuing this construction albeit in a smaller scale,” he writes. The Lubyanka contingent “does not know how to build anything except a Reich because the NKVD and the Gestapo as a rule adopted on occupied territories one and the same buildings and thoroughly copied each other’s methods.”

“Of course,” Portnikov concedes, “Putin and his entourage think more about money and less about ideology just as Stalin thought less about ideology and more about power. It is possible that for Hitler ideology was of the essence while for Stalin or Putin, it is only a cover.”
Staunton, March 27 — Some Russians explain the holding of a conference in St. Petersburg of fascists from around the world by suggesting that those are the only supporters Vladimir Putin can find in much the same way they excuse Stalin for becoming an ally with Hitler via the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. Oh, this is good.

Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy's letter to me about the California drought. Just in case you wanted to know...

Dear Ms. Cawelti,

Earlier this month the California drought that has burdened our communities for years burst onto the national stage following the water rationing mandate announced by Governor Brown. The images of fallowed fields and dry lakes may have been shocking for viewers across the country, but these are more than images to us.

Serving as better stewards of this precious resource is a task that all Californians should take seriously. But we cannot ration our way out of this crisis. And in many communities, our water supplies are close to zero. It is impossible to ration what you don’t have. Instead, the onus should be placed on fixing failed federal and state policies that put the well-being of fish above the well-being of people.

In the House of Representatives, I have been committed to this over the past several years and as Majority Whip and now Majority Leader, I have been able to move legislation through the House to help fix this problem. After passing legislation that would increase water deliveries south and allow for more storage, liberals in the Senate rejected the call from our communities to find a solution and blocked each bill from getting to the President’s desk.

This crisis demands action and I will continue to pursue every legislative avenue I can to fix the mismanagement of California’s water system.

In the coming months, the House will introduce and pass a long-term solution to the decades of failed policy—just as we have in the previous Congresses. In addition to this bill, we are identifying other approaches to increasing water deliveries and storage.

Last week we took the first step of the 114th Congress by adding an amendment to the fiscal year 2016 Energy and Water Development, and Related Agencies Appropriations bill that demands the federal government take action on several feasibility studies for California water storage projects. Many of these studies have been stuck in the federal bureaucracy for 10 to 15 years. If built, these five storage projects could increase water storage capacity in our state between 1 million to 1.5 million acre-feet, almost the same amount of water Governor Brown’s mandatory rationing order is trying to save.

The Appropriations Committee approved this bill and it will be considered—and likely passed—on the House floor this week.

Californians cannot wait for action on our current drought. But so far the only response from our state and federal leaders has been a “less is more” attitude. House Republicans believe in a far more dynamic approach that will unleash California’s spirit of innovation and ingenuity to overcome times of drought. I hope our Senate Democrat colleagues and the Administration will join us in this effort.

Sincerely,

Congressman Kevin McCarthy

I write literature that reads like pulp fiction. I like my bad guys really bad and my good guys smarter and better.
Introduction

Nike Chillemi started writing at a very young age. She still has the Crayola, fully illustrated book she penned (colored might be more accurate) as a little girl about her then off-the-chart love of horses. Today, you might call her a crime fictionista. Her passion is crime fiction. She likes her bad guys really bad and her good guys smarter and better.

Nike is the founding board member of the Grace Awards and is its Chairman, a reader's choice awards for excellence in Christian fiction. She writes book reviews for The Christian Pulse online magazine. She was an Inspy Awards 2010 judge in the Suspense/Thriller/Mystery category, a judge in the 2011, 2012, and 2013 Carol Awards in the suspense, mystery, and romantic suspense categories, and a judge in the Eric Hoffer Awards in 2012 and 2013.

Her four novel Sanctuary Point series, set in the mid-1940s has won awards and garnered critical acclaim. Her new contemporary whodunit, HARMFUL INTENT released in the spring of 2014 under the auspices of her own publishing company, Crime Fictionista Press. She is a member of American Christian Fiction Writers (ACFW) and Christian Indie Novelists (CHIN).

Nike loves animals, the ocean and is a healthy-eating foodie…these themes show up in her novels.  http://nikechillemi.wordpress.com/

This is an elegant, family-run Brooklyn Italian restaurant. Our family goes there every New Year's Eve for the last sitting, the party where we eat good food and have a "classy" blast. We also go a few times during the year. The host will bring your drinks because it's family owned and he's showing how much he values you as a customer. So, throw out all your preconceived ideas about how a restaurant should be. On New Year's Eve I met the owner's daughter-in-law in the ladies room and we started talking, after we walked out...still talking...I admired her sequined dress (vintage and gorgeous on her) and she told me her teenage daughter hated it. Then she hugged me and wished me a "Happy New Year." I would go here for dinner anytime, bring out of town friends, as well as go for that special occasion.
