This is surely not new, but maybe a good strategy for authentication would be that you set up multiple communication methods with an account.  When you want to reset the password on login, etc.  Different codes are sent to different devices.  For example, if you setup email and SMS, send "1:1234" to email and "2:5678" to SMS.  You then have to use both pieces on the website to reset your password.  You could have N communication points to increase security.  An attacker would then need to compromise all your devices, etc.  Of course, if you get email and SMS on your smartphone, that's not really going to help much.

This is more a message for future jason. #security

Terry Bisson's classic short story "They're Made Out of Meat" originally appeared in Omni Magazine in 1991, and our audio version was produced for WNYC's Studio 360 in November 2011. We've re-mixed the story especially for this podcast, and it's followed by an interview with Bisson himself. The story was performed by Russ Armstrong & Miriam Tolan, and produced by Jonathan Mitchell.

Glad to hear someone actually talking about solutions. In order to fix things, ignoring the complaints of the fossil fuel industry (losers) will be necessary. Same with health care. Too much money involved.

[Planet Money] 472: The One-Page Plan To Fix Global Warming

Climate change seems like this complicated, intractable problem. But maybe it doesn't have to be. On today's show, we talk to a couple economists about a very simple idea that could solve the climate-change problem: Tax carbon emissions. A carbon tax could be paired with cuts in the income tax. And it would drive down emissions without picking winners or losers, and without creating complicated regulations.

[Planet Money] 470: Killing Fannie Mae

#podiversity http://prime.podiversity.com/shared/planet-money/63623a7c8c71d42a68a7063190467bd6
Five years after the financial crisis, the federal government still controls Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, two giant companies that guarantee trillions of dollars in mortgages. This is a huge, little-discussed part of the post-crisis economy. Almost everybody agrees that taxpayers shouldn't be on the hook when their neighbors don't pay their mortgages. But the government doesn't have a clear plan to get out of the mortgage business. Last week, two ...

chromecast. After just a single day of Chromecast devices flying off of the shelves, Google has decided to end the sweet three months of free Netflix deal. Google reported to the LA Times that the deal was too sweet and couldn't keep up with demand. So in essence, was Google losing too much ...

There’s no one like you. At least, not yet. But in some visions of the future, androids can do just about everything, computers will hook directly into your brain, and genetic human-hybrids with exotic traits will be walking the streets. So could humans become an endangered species? Be prepared to meet the new-and-improved you. But how much human would actually remain in the humanoids of the future? Plus, tips for preventing our own extinction in...
