Mountain gorilla trekking is the top tourism attraction of Rwanda and has elevated this small land-locked country's status as a travel destination.

But a recently announced increase in the price of gorilla trekking permits threatens the country’s growing popularity with travellers.

Does Rwanda have enough other highlights to keep attracting travellers who now can't afford to track for gorillas? Based on my time there earlier this year, absolutely!

Mountain gorilla treks are becoming one of the most popular wildlife encounters in Africa and is Rwanda's greatest tourist attraction. But despite the popularity, a trek is a deeply personal experience, sharing an hour with a mountain gorilla family and only 7 other travellers.

This was my second visit to the gorillas in Rwanda and even more incredible and memorable than the first.

Check out my latest blog post for the story behind the photos.

When you think of Rwanda, mountain gorillas and the horrific 1994 genocide probably come to mind.

But do you know it was one of the first countries in the world to ban plastic bags? Are you aware of its reputation as one of the top five destinations in the world for bird watching? And do you know Rwanda has the world’s highest representation of women in parliament?
Read on for these and more things you might now know about Rwanda.

Many foreigners associate Rwanda with two things – mountain gorillas and the 1994 genocide. But the attractions of this small land-locked country in East Africa extend beyond tracking the world’s largest primate in its natural habitat. And whilst the genocide is an unforgettable chapter in the country’s history, Rwanda is now considered one of Africa’s safest and most peaceful countries.

As most of you were partying through the end of 2016 into 2017, I was sleeping through it! I'm hoping that's a sign of the previous nights' long-haul flight and busy travel schedule over the past few months rather than my age.

I certainly didn't sleep through 2016 though. Here are my favourite travel photos of the year, as I reflect on the year that was and plan the year ahead.

Happy new year everyone - I hope 2017 brings you health and happiness.
