How #GALAXYS5 can be Dust and Water Resistant
with a removable battery
See how Samsung created an IP67-compliant smartphone while keeping the battery removable and the water-resistant feature phone that started it all.
What is IP67?
The GALAXY S5 follows an IP67 rating based on the Ingress Protection Code, which has numbers to represent different levels of dust and water protection. The first number, six, represents the level of dust protection. Level six dust protection is the highest possible rating and means complete protection from dust. The second number, seven, is on a scale from zero to eight and represents the level of water resistance. The higher the number, the more protection the device has from water. IPX7 means that your device can be protected while immersed in water up to 1 meter for 30 minutes.
(Note: IP code protection levels are published by the International Electrotechnical Commission.)
A removable battery
A useful feature in GALAXY smartphones is the removable battery. Since the feature is so popular, we have decided to keep the battery removable even when developing the IP67 Dust and Water Resistance feature on the GALAXY S5. It has been challenging to achieve this because every new point of exposure requires another design change to block dust and water.
When you remove the back cover, you can see the rubber seal inside the cover. This keeps dust and water out of the inner workings of the phone. This innovative feature has also been integrated into the entire Samsung Mobile accessory line (S View Cover, Flip Wallet, S View Wireless Cover) that also incorporates a rubber seal inside the back cover.
The GALAXY S5 also has an earphone jack, speaker and receiver that are all dust and water resistant. The earphone jack is able to keep the dust and water out by acting as a container, preventing dust and water from getting inside. For example, if water flows into the earphone jack you can just shake out the water and continue using the phone.
Did you know?
GALAXY S5 is not the first phone that Samsung brought to the market as a water-resistant phone. In March 2009, we introduced the water-resistant phone Xplorer (GT-B2100), and since then, we have steadily developed our technique for dust and water resistance, resulting in new innovations on the GALAXY S5.
*Note: The IP67 rating might not reflect all variables in daily life. We recommend users avoid using the device in extreme situations or performing their own tests on the product. If the rubber seal on the back cover is damaged, the dust- and water- resistant features may not work well.
