These are good ideas.  Losing weight really is a two step process of exercise and diet.  As for exercise, do both cardio and weight lifting.  If you do sets of weight training quick enough, you get the benefit of both.
As for diet, get a good diet program that emphasizes good quality nutrition but is less dense in calories.*

Our problem was before and subtly after gestational diabetes.  My wife had Diabetes while pregnant that we had a little bit of trouble managing. It was hard for her because she was hungry for certain high sugar/carb items. She ate a lot of vegetables that were sweeter–ie) beets, but they were not off the charts bad. After the baby, she was about 30 lbs. over weight, which is typical.
MUCH of the information here is what we used to help her with the weight. It is all about portions and calorie counting.
She got and stuck with a good diet plan*

We were able to work together so that she lost the weight. In the meantime, I took on a career as a weight loss adviser and fitness trainer–who knew? All thanks to my lovely wife and daughter.

My program suggests isometric training for people with bad joints.*
