A quick read from +Penelope Trunk's homeschooling blog today. Couldn't agree more. (The comments are worth the read too.)

My husband is a former teacher. My father-in-law is a former teacher & principal. My mother-in-law is a former teacher & assistant principal. My sister is a former teacher.

We homeschool. So does my sister.

+Danielle Greason Online Business Services, we've tried 'em all – homeschooling, private, public, University-Model. We've been homeschooling for the last few years though.

Next year we're trying something  a bit new in that they'll go to school just two days a week. We can pick and choose the classes they take so it'll be nice to tailor make each child's schedule, depending on what they do or don't need.

We've always taken things a year at a time and we certainly have respect for every family's decision. I think there are pros and cons to all scenarios.

For us, in the end, it comes down to how many pros there are compared to the cons, and the public schools near us have usually come up short on the pros side.

Reading this interesting article about #college :

More than 40 percent of American students who start at four-year colleges haven’t earned a degree after six years. If you include community-college students in the tabulation, the dropout rate is more than half, worse than any other country except Hungary...[and]...whether a student graduates or not seems to depend today almost entirely on just one factor — how much money his or her parents make. To put it in blunt terms: Rich kids graduate; poor and working-class kids don’t.

The state of education is very disheartening.  The increase in cost and the decrease in scholarships in the last 10 years is also disheartening.

I'm not good at promoting my own stuff. I wish it was a matter of humility, but it's not so much that.

This is what I think. Maybe it'll help you too.

Tips for Standing Out on Social Media

Of all the tips here, part 2 of this one stood out. From +Jason Cruz at

When deciding which social platform to be on, consider just two things: where your consumers currently are, and the next place they could potentially be. Then work more on the ‘next place’ — and stay ahead.

So much of this post describes me, like this:

In fact, I think school is worst for the kids who do the best. Because if you get used to being told you are smart and good for learning what someone tells you to learn, then it's a rude awakening when no one gives you gold stars as a young adult. And it's a rude awakening when no one tells you what to do as a young adult.
