How I Use My Editorial Calendar

I know there are a lot of ways to keep an editorial calendar, but this is what works for me. It's a prettied-up Google spreadsheet with a calendar, topics, notes and a shortlink.

I use the Insert --> Note feature to keep things looking nice and clean.

Tips for Standing Out on Social Media

Of all the tips here, part 2 of this one stood out. From +Jason Cruz at http://jsncruz.com/

When deciding which social platform to be on, consider just two things: where your consumers currently are, and the next place they could potentially be. Then work more on the ‘next place’ — and stay ahead.

So much of this post describes me, like this:

In fact, I think school is worst for the kids who do the best. Because if you get used to being told you are smart and good for learning what someone tells you to learn, then it's a rude awakening when no one gives you gold stars as a young adult. And it's a rude awakening when no one tells you what to do as a young adult.

My younger son wants to go to school. I won't let him. It's clear to me that he has no ability to understand why school is crushingly terrible. I mean, most adults can't even see it. The reinforcement kids get about school is incredible. The ads on TV talk about how important it is for kids to ...

Can you still become YouTube famous?

An interesting read about how things have changed over the last 10 years. I love the internet because it has leveled the playing field in so many ways. At the same time though, the playing field changes constantly.

It's not as easy as it used to be: If you’re lucky enough to achieve a moment of virality, you better be already prepared to be a rock star.

A quick read from +Penelope Trunk's homeschooling blog today. Couldn't agree more. (The comments are worth the read too.)

My husband is a former teacher. My father-in-law is a former teacher & principal. My mother-in-law is a former teacher & assistant principal. My sister is a former teacher.

We homeschool. So does my sister.

This is an excerpt from the book Humans of New York, by Brandon Stanton. The book is a compendium of street photography and stories from the people in the pictures. "His grandmother and I are raising him. I worry about putting him into the public school system. I was a teacher for many years.

Reading this interesting article about #college :

More than 40 percent of American students who start at four-year colleges haven’t earned a degree after six years. If you include community-college students in the tabulation, the dropout rate is more than half, worse than any other country except Hungary...[and]...whether a student graduates or not seems to depend today almost entirely on just one factor — how much money his or her parents make. To put it in blunt terms: Rich kids graduate; poor and working-class kids don’t.

Rich students complete their college degrees; working-class students like Vanessa Brewer usually don’t. Can the University of Texas change her chances of success?

The state of education is very disheartening.  The increase in cost and the decrease in scholarships in the last 10 years is also disheartening.
