NPR Story: Toxic Chemical Dioxane Detected In Water Supplies

Recently NPR ran a story about the chemical 1,4-dioxane being detected in water systems, and not being effectively removed by the treatment process. Industries use 1,4-dioxane to dissolve oily or greasy substances.  

As part of the UCMR3 program, EPA is having some water systems across the country test for 1,4-dioxane.  Anatek Labs is certified by the EPA for the UCMR3 program, where we use EPA Method 522 to analyze water samples for the presence of 1,4-dioxane.

Anatek Labs, Inc. has developed a high-performance liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry (HPLC/MS/MS) method for the analysis of methamphetamine in a variety of matrices. Our method uses HPLC interfaced with electrospray ionization and a triple quadruple mass spectrometer (MS/MS). The use of MS/MS makes this method selective and sensitive with detection limits less than 0.01ug/wipe at the 95% confidence level.

Why test for coliform bacteria?

Coliform bacteria exist virtually everywhere in our environment and are generally not harmful. The presence of coliform bacteria in drinking water can indicate that a water system has been breached and that material from the surrounding environment is contaminating the water. Some of these contaminants may be disease-causing organisms.

Testing for every disease-causing organism is costly, difficult and impractical. For this reason, coliform bacteria tests have been used for most of the last century as an indicator of overall water quality, including the presence or absence of disease-causing organisms.

Whenever Anatek Labs, Inc. receives a sample that tests positive for coliform bacteria, that sample is also tested for the presence of E. coli, which can help in the investigation for the source of contamination.

What is E. coli?

Escherichia coli, commonly known as E. coli, is a member of the coliform bacteria family that can cause severe intestinal illness. Symptoms of E. coli may include diarrhea, fever and dehydration. The presence of E. coli in a water sample suggests contamination with fecal material.

What about other disease-causing organisms?

Some diseases that spread through drinking water (such as cholera, typhoid, hepatitis giardiasis and dysentery) are caused by kinds of bacteria that do not belong to the coliform family. However, if no coliform bacteria colonies are found in a sample, there is good reason to believe the water system is free of any disease-causing organisms.

What if my water tests positive for coliform bacteria?

Most bacteria can be purged from your system with a simple disinfection procedure. Re-testing your water source after disinfection can help ensure that the system has been effectively purged.

Anatek Labs, Inc. is approved by the EPA for the testing of drinking water under the UCMR3 program (Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Regulation 3, Rule 3, or Phase 3). Anatek is approved for six UCMR3 methods. The methods are very demanding and include analysis by HPLC/MS/MS, GC/MS/MS, ICP-MS and ion chromotagraphy with detection limit requirements as low as 2 parts per trillion (ppt). Analysis for UCMR3 contaminants began in 2013 and will last for 3 years. Systems required to test will be notified by the EPA and/or their State.
