Last week I had the honor of attending the 1st General Assembly of the US Roundtable for Sustainable Beef and report on it for Triple Pundit.. Quite a few deep green voices were missing from the conversation and some interesting things were said about those of us who advocate for organic and natural foods. What do you think? http://www.triplepundit.com/2015/07/u-s-roundtable-on-sustainable-beef-whats-the-beef/
3p Correspondent Danika Carter attended this group's inaugural meeting in Denver to report on who led the charge -- and who was absent.

Truth or deception? New report exposes how industry front groups are spending millions to shape the story of food.

Safe food bloggers and activists are being viciously attacked as "anti-science." It's not just their arguments that are being disputed, but they are being personally attacked and eviscerated in the media. Why is that?

+Kari Hamerschlag of +Friends of the Earth U.S., +Stacy Malkan of
+GMOs: What You Need to Know, Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and U.S. & +California Right To Know, and +Anna Lappe of
+Small Planet Institute Real Food Media Project investigated these PR campaigns and learned some staggering facts -- they are spending HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS waging PR wars to attack ‪#‎organic‬, promote ‪#‎GMOs‬, defend pesticides and push the corporate ag agenda. Because organic and non-GMO food sales are skyrocketing as more and more people are choosing healthier, more sustainable food produced without synthetic pesticides, GMOs or the routine use of antibiotics and added hormones.

Please read the report, and share widely. It's time to expose big agribusiness's nefarious practices to protect their profits at the expense of our health and environment.

Friends of the Earth is fighting to defend the environment and create a more healthy and just world. We're progressive environmental advocates who pull no punches and speak sometimes uncomfortable truths to power.

Last fall I had the opportunity to attend the +ShiftCon Eco-Wellness Social Media Conference. It was such an amazing weekend. I got to meet many of my favorite ‪#‎green‬ & ‪#‎wellness‬ bloggers, ‪#‎NonGMO‬ & safe food advocates and sustainable brands. ShiftCon is a social media conference that was born out of the idea that together we can create a profound impact on the world around us. We can literally shift how we eat, raise our families and our impact on the environment. It is organized by +Leah Segedie of +Mamavation. I am already getting giddy about this year's conference and it's not until September!

Tomorrow there is going to be a Facebook Party about Shiftcon, how we can all work together to shift the market. Even if you're not a blogger or brand, you should join this Facebook party. We need all of us if we are going to change our food system and other products to put ‪#‎health‬ & wellness front & center.

Great deal! Buy 2 #organic hand soap concentrates and get our beautiful #ecofriendly ceramic dispenser #FREE until July 8th! Most hand soap on the market contain nasty chemicals. But there is no need to use them when you can get ours that is certified organic. You can feel confident letting your children use it. And because it comes in concentrated form there is less water and less packaging per use than many other hand soaps. Our beautiful ceramic dispenser looks great in your bathroom or your kitchen. +The White House garden tour was just announced for this weekend. To coincide with the tour, +Friends of the Earth U.S. is asking folks to virtually “swarm” the garden tour to ask her to take action on bee-toxic pesticides on the White House gardens, grounds and beyond to protect bees and other pollinators essential to our food system and environment. If you can, please join the swarm!

Here are details to participate in the virtual swarm this weekend:
The tour is both Saturday and Sunday, so schedule tweets throughout the weekend with programs like HootSuite or TweetDeck. Be sure to include ‪#‎WHGarden‬ because it’s the “official” hashtag for the tour and we want folks to take it over with our collective message.

Hasthtags: ‪#‎BeeKindObama‬, #WHGarden ‪#‎Letsmove‬
Targets:@FLOTUS, @MichelleObama

Sample tweets:
.@FLOTUS.@MichelleObama the bees can’t wait. #LetsMove to protect bees from toxic pesticides. #BeekindObama #WHGarden

.@MichelleObama.@FLOTUS can be an ally for the bees. #LetsMove to ban bee-killing pesticides today in your garden and beyond #WHGarden #BeeKindObama

Lab test results obtained by the group examined 42 products, 26 of which contained lead and/or cadmium at levels above what the state of California considers safe. The brands that tested positive for heavy metals included Hershey’s, Mars, Ghiradhelli, Godiva, See’s, Lindt, Whole Foods, and Green and Black’s.

Some of the chocolate tested contained lead at levels up to 5.9 times California’s “safe harbor” level—or the maximum allowable daily limit—for reproductive harm, and found cadmium at levels up to 8.2 times the limit.

We’ve begun to expect unusual flavors like chili, salt, and lavender in chocolate. But there might be another surprising addition to your Valentine’s Day sweets: heavy metals. According to the consumer health watchdog As You Sow, there’s a good chance that chocolate you buy may contain lead or cadmium. Lab test results obtained by the... Read More

Michigan’s bald eagles are among the most contaminated birds on the planet when it comes to phased-out flame retardant chemicals in their livers, according to new research.

It is unclear what, if anything, the flame retardants contaminating Michigan's bald eagles might mean for their health.

The study, published last month in the Journal of Great Lakes Research, found that the top predators in the Great Lakes are highly exposed to banned flame retardants, still widespread in the environment.

Michigan’s population of bald eagles is stable, but the compounds have been linked in other birds to impaired reproduction, weird behavior and development, and hormone disruption.

“While the sensitivity of eagles to PBDEs has yet to be determined, there is a possibility that the exposures reported here may be associated with sub-clinical effects,” Nil Basu, an associate professor at McGill University who led study while at the University of Michigan, said in an email.
