MIT finger device reads to the blind in real time
The FingerReader is a wearable device that assists in reading printed text. It is a tool both for visually impaired people that require help with accessing printed text, as well as an aid for language translation. Wearers scan a text line with their finger and receive an audio feedback of the words and a haptic feedback of the layout: start and end of line, new line, and other cues. The FingerReader algorithm knows to detect and give feedback when the user veers away from the baseline of the text, and helps them maintain a straight scanning motion within the line.
MIT Media Lab researchers say the device can read books, restaurant menus, business cards and other texts.

For those who weren't aware of this great success story, Munich's adoption of Linux on the desktop has saved them millions of Euros and, even more importantly to people like myself, given them freedoms (and privacy) they would not have without it.

They were not the first city or government agency to go down this path, but they are one of the largest that has done so successfully and the plans created and execute were  both far reaching and highly coordinated. They learned a lot in the process that other municipalities and regions could leverage that knowledge to do the same with fewer hiccups along the way.

(Yes, I'm looking at you, Solothurn. ;)

Note: while most headlines are screaming "Munich switched to Ubuntu, saved millions", the story below is a rather more accurate look at it. Munich originally used a plain Debian base, later moved to an Ubuntu derivative (Kubuntu) to streamline things. In all iterations they have seen savings both from the OS but also thanks to using OpenOffice, Kontact and KDE's dekstop (3.5 and Plasma 4.x). Most recently they added to this strategic direction by starting the roll-out of free software powered groupware services (Kolab). Thus they have gotten out from the licensing (and security, privacy and freedom) weight of Microsoft's Windows, Office, Outlook and Exchange (among other) products. Fantastic!
It may have taken the best part of a decade, but the City of Munich says its decision to switch to open-source software has saved an estimated ten million Euros.

How to run a hackathon.

Finally, this is the big one, the super-detailed, 'How to run a hackathon.' post. This is 3/4 in my series on the recent  Pre-I/O Google Glass Hackathon that I ran. I included absolutely all of the information, data, and thoughts that I could think to include on this. I hope people find it useful.

If you're going to plan a hackathon, or a large, long event, you might consider this a good starting point, with some good advice. Sorry it's ridiculously long.

Asteroid and comet impacts could have destroyed some habitats for life while also creating new ones for bacteria

How cool are these teens?
As a teenager, I wasted much of my life and loved every minute of it. Rather than do anything productive, I would vegetate in front of the TV watching movies like Smokey and the Bandit on WPIX. The concept of actually learning something outside of school was foreign -- who wants to learn during their free time? In my defense though, the 90's didn't offer much outside of TV and AOL chat rooms.
