Thoughts are just thoughts. They are not necessarily true or helpful - they are just thoughts. This means we do not have to blindly follow every thought. When we are being mindful we see the thought arising and we have a chose to follow or not. If it is a good thought, follow it. If it is an unhelpful thought, let it go. But we can only do this when we are present in the here and now. If our mind is in the past or the future we will find ourselves following every thought, without realising it.

If you can approach your day with a beginner's mind, forgive yourself, have gratitude and compassion, understand you are not perfect, embrace your vulnerability and accept that change is a part if life, then you are being truly mindful.

There is always something positive in our day, but we tend to miss it and focus on the negative instead. Don't let the negative overwhelm you, look for the silver lining.

Our mind is like a muscle, the more we use it the stronger it becomes.

When we think about something it makes a path in our mind. So the more you think about it the stronger the path becomes. It is like walking through a forest everyday. The more you walk along the same path, the more that path gets visible and easier to use.

So if we think about kindness, compassion and helping others, this will be the pathway we are creating in our mind.

The more good we do, the easier it will be to do good, as this will be our strongest pathway.

We never talk about trees getting older. We say they are ‘Growing’. Let’s use the same term for ourselves: we’re not getting older, we’re just growing in wisdom, spirituality and compassion. This is a more positive approach to life.

It seems to me that we humans have lost our way. We care more about our phones than our families. Chatting online seems to be more important than talking face to face. Technology is there to help us, not to control us. We are social animals and it is time for us to start being social again.

Even when we have down time we still don't rest in the present moment. We plan our next moves or relive some past experience. It is only when we embrace the present that we can really appreciate, and be one with, what is going on around us.

“We can prove to ourselves that perception is artificial and personal by remembering how often people disagree about the beauty or ugliness, deliciousness or distastefulness, pleasantness or unpleasantness, of a particular work of art, architectural style, item of clothing, type of food, or musical composition.”

– Bhante Gunaratana

We all come from different walks of life. We have different experiences, different habits, likes and dislikes. So obviously we are going to see things differently from others. There is no right and wrong here, just different perceptions. If we embrace difference we will be more tolerant and the world would be a more peaceful place.
