Classic Car Insurance

Since owners of classic cars drive them less and typically take the best care of them, auto insurance premium rates can be nearly 50% lower. The auto insurance policy will limit how many miles you can drive it and also may require it to be garaged when not being driven. Classic car insurance requires that the automobile is not to be used as your primary transportation.

Graduated Driver Licensing Saves Lives

Auto insurance is higher for drivers under the age of 25 because teenagers cause a disproportionate number of accidents and traffic deaths. Over 20 years ago states began restricting the hours that the first time driver is legally allowed to drive.

For example, Florida has the following requirements:

Must be at least 16 years old

Must hold learner’s license for at least one year (12 months) OR reach age 18, whichever comes first

A parent, legal guardian or responsible adult over 21 years old must complete the Certification of Minor Driving Experience Form, certifying the driver has 50 hours of driving experience, of which 10 hours must be at night. Use this Practice Log Sheet to track driving experience time

NO moving violation convictions for one year from learner’s license date of issuance (OR may have one moving violation as long as adjudication was withheld);
Must pass Class E Driving Skills Test

Testing options
The vehicle used for the driving test must have a valid registration, proof of insurance and pass a basic vehicle inspection that is conducted by the driver license examiner to determine that it is safe for a driving test; and

Must provide documents needed to establish proof of identity, proof of Social Security number and proof of residential address if you have not previously provided these documents. You can visit flhsmv.gov/whattobring for a list of acceptable documents.

Graduated Driver Licensing restrictions reduced automobile related deaths among 15-19 year old's by over 50%. A recent survey of 500 parents of teen drivers conducted by OP4G found that parents allow their new drivers to violate some important Graduated Driver Licensing restrictions. Only 41% of parents required their under-18 drivers to follow all GDL guidelines.

Hurricane Season Home Insurance Preparedness

Most people think they are prepared for the next tropical storm or hurricane season, but usually the opposite is correct. Does your Florida homeowner insurance adequately cover the increased value of your house? Below is another check list of things to do before hurricane season arrives.

1. Take inside anything that can be moved by the strong winds possible with a hurricane or tropical storm. This is protection for your house, your family, and your neighbors.

2. Secure your most important papers, files, and other personal items for the evacuation trip. Some of the documents to take out of your home include wills, insurance policies, stocks, and licenses. Keep up-to-date data files backed up elsewhere that can include some of these documents and video of the inside of your home.

3. Turn off your electricity, gas, and water before evacuating inland.

4. Build a disaster supply kit that includes a 3-5 day supply of non-perishable food and a non-electric can opener; 3 gallons (or more) of water per person; battery-powered radio and flashlight and extra batteries; disposable cleaning cloths for bathing; bath soap, toothpaste and shampoo; special items for infants such as extra diapers, and keep extra bedding and clothes dry.

5. Have an evacuation plan prepared for where you want to go inland. Notify family where you are going to and how to get in contact with you.

6. If you plan on going to a public shelter remember that pets are not allowed.

Has Your Homeowner Insurance Policy Adjusted For Inflation

Evaluate any changes you may have made to your home during the last year and review whether your Florida homeowner insurance policy covers those changes. Don't discover that you're underinsured after you need to file a claim. One external change that happens most years is inflation. A homeowner insurance policy that covers 100% of the value of your house usually includes inflation guard coverage.

However, not everyone chooses 100% coverage. Some choose a 80% coverage level for their homeowner insurance to save money. They should confirm whether inflation has left them in a further underinsured position.

The Left-Lane Slower Driver and an Urgency to Pass

Insurance.com asked 1,000 licensed drivers over the age of 25 about the actions they take in order to pass someone driving too slowly in the left lane. Those actions could include tailgating, flashing their headlights, or turning on signals. This is further evidence of why younger drivers are charged more for auto insurance.

Fourty-one percent of the same group of licensed drivers want the police to warn a driver or ticket them if they drive too slowly in the left lane when the right lane was available.

A 2013 study by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found that illegal passing, erratic lane changing, or dangerous tailgating were a factor in over 55% of fatal automobile accidents.

Smoke Alarms - Florida Homeowner Insurance

Do you have ionization detector smoke alarms or photoelectric sensor smoke alarms in your home? If you don't know, have someone with you to assist as one of you climb up a ladder or stool and look on the back of the smoke alarm. It usually says there. The National Fire Protection Association recommends using both ionization and photoelectric smoke alarms for your home. Why both types you might ask. Typically there are two types of fires in homes, smoldering and fast-flaming. You need smoke alarm coverage for both and some smoke detectors offer both, but most homes have less expensive ionization only detectors.

A smoldering fire is best detected by smoke alarms with photoelectric sensors because this type of fire produces a lot of smoke but not many flames, while a fast-flaming fire has a lot of flames and not much smoke. The ionization detector smoke alarm is needed for the fast-flaming home fire.

Protect your home and get a homeowner insurance discount with installed smoke detectors that provide protection for both types of home fires.

The Driving Hazards of Floods and Rising Waters

Places you routinely drive can become dangerous in a rising waters or flooding conditions. That highway overpass you drive under each day to work could quickly build up standing water from the run-off of a seemingly brief rain or overnight storm. Remember the following points to stay safe driving in flood prone road areas.

Water depth on a road prone for flooding is not always obvious. Don't attempt to drive through a flooded road and risk getting stranded or trapped.

Only 6 inches of water will reach the bottom of most cars and can cause loss of control and possible stalling.

Just 1 foot of water will float many cars and small trucks.

Only 2 feet of rushing water can carry away most vehicles including SUV's and pick-up trucks.

Barricades are used for good reasons in times of flooding concerns. Do not try to take short cuts around them. Turn around and go the other direction.

In the event of major flooding or tropical storm warnings in Florida, always follow the designated evacuation routes.

As with all night driving, recognizing flood dangers can be more difficult, so observe extra caution.

Hail and Wind Damage - Homeowner Insurance

Hail damage is the second highest claim frequency for homeowners according to the Insurance Information Institute. The average claim is nearly $8,000. While you can't prevent hail, there are some preventative measures a homeowner can take to reduce the exposure risk.

1. Inspect your roof yearly.
2. Repair any loose or missing roof tiles.
3. Upgrade to hail-resistant asphalt shingles with a Class 4 rating if in a hail prone area.
4. Inspect your roof soon after experiencing hail. The next rain could bring water inside your home from a leaking roof.

The cost to upgrade from a standard asphalt shingle to a Class 4 impact resistant asphalt shingle is approximately 75% to 100% higher. If you live in a hail prone area of the U.S., such as Florida, this added cost can make sense from a repair cost and insurance premium savings basis.

1. Pull down those loose limbs and branches before the wind sends them somewhere you don't want.
2. Have an electric saw to remove fallen trees from your driveway.
3. Remove objects that are outside that can damage your home, cars, or others property during excessive winds.
