Lieutenant Doppler is a villain I can get behind. He has just enough description that a DM can make him their own brand of awful. Who needs half a page of back story when a few lines will do?

Listening back on this episode its interesting to hear me play the common folk of Castle Wittgenstein's as largely sympathetic and the guards as non-suicidal. It's a deal breaker for me when rational foes with little at stake fight to the death. I happily had the guards surrender when obviously outmatched.

Episode 19 - The Enemy Within - the Awful Lieutenant Doppler
It's not ' The Enemy Within ' without some Ian Miller art. This is an actual play recording of  Death on the Reik , a chapter in Games Workshop's classic campaign  The Enemy Within . If you cannot see the audio controls, your browser does not support the au...

Another catch up podcast/blog post.

Here we see the fine line our Shallayan priestess walks with her vow of non violence. She loads crossbows which her companions use to pepper the guards with bolts. Her justification: she just loads them, nothing violent in that. If the halfings then choose to shoot people with them that's on them and not her.

There may be some divine repurcussions down the track but for now her jumping through moral hoops amuses me.

Next up Castle Wittgenstein proper. Cockroach men, deamonettes, frankenstein monsters and the whole shebang!

Episode 18 - The Enemy Within - Taking Castle Wittgensteins gatehouse
The mission: seize Castle Wittgenstein and end the Wittgenstein's mad reign. This is an actual play recording of  Death on the Reik , a chapter in Games Workshop's classic campaign  The Enemy Within . If you cannot see the audio controls, your browser does ...

Castle Wittgenstein is a blast to run as its full of character and characters. This session the group worked their way through the tunnels underneath the castle. The map threatens to turn into a maze which I handwaved away given the party had dwarves who would have felt at home underground. That and I hate mazes as a player and didn't want to inflict one on the group.

We also saw Barakul the warpblade in action this session. It went someway to speeding up combat against heavily armed foes.

Episode 17 - The Enemy Within - Beneath Castle Wittgenstein
Beastmen haunt the Wittgendorf woods. One served as a tracker for the castle guards. This is an actual play recording of  Death on the Reik , a chapter in Games Workshop's classic campaign  The Enemy Within . If you cannot see the audio controls, your brows...

While BOYL raged in the UK Optimus and I got a final game of Rogue Trader in back in AUS.

This game was the best of a series of 3 Rogue Trader outings and it saw the Hellsreach Walker in use for the whole shebang. It even saw some boarding action at the hands of eldar exodites. Fun Times.

Rogue Trader - The last hurrah - Marines v Eldar v Hellsreach Slavers
Optimus fobbed off family commitments and managed a final game before quiting the country. Some discussion and a roll on the random narrative generator meant we soon had the following: Mutie the pig and his slaving company had ambushed some early model Impe...

Some old lead gets a run as we give the Pulp Alley rules for a spin.

We have been finding creating balanced scenarios a challenge with the Rogue Trader rules. Our latest Rogue Trader games have hinged on single dice rolls with either a third of the marines failing to teleport in for a battle or a space vampire being pulped by lucky bolter rounds before getting the chance to do anything. Pulp Alley seemed to solve that as it makes key characters very resiliant.

I don't know if I prefer Pulp Alley over Rogue Trader. They scratch different but similar itches. If you want to try a 40k space opera style game then Pulp Alley is a good fit.
