Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)/Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) controversy rages on.

Fiona Godlee, editor of the BMJ, provides an interesting commentary on the controversy that besets the scientific research and clinical management of CFS/ME (BMJ 2011;342:d3956).

Sadly, some people have reacted to her comments with anger, and in so doing unwittingly prove her point. If you are suffering from CFS/ME, or if you care for someone with the condition, you would do well to read this article dispassionately. There will always be exceptions to prove a rule, but in my clinical practice I have found graded exercise and cognitive behavioural therapy to be invaluable aspects of successful clinical management of this dreadful condition.

Sleep is important for weight management.

New study reveals the impact sleep can have on weight management.
Nedeltcheva AV et al. have just reported in Ann Intern Med (2010 Oct 5; 153:435) that getting adequate sleep is a vital part of any weight loss programme: calorie-restricted participants who got adequate sleep lost more fat than lean.

Nedeltcheva AV et al. conducted this study to determine whether “sleep loss can modify energy intake and expenditure”.

Food allergy bullying is a serious issue.

Thirty to forty percent of children with serious food allergy have had it ‘thrown in their face’ by classmates, teachers and other school staff. As if the condition itself wasn’t a big enough burden to bear, where meticulous care has to be taken to avoid contact with even trace amounts of allergen, these children face the added threat of allergen exposure being forced on them by bullies. Sabotaged lunch boxes and similar offenses are potentially fatal, and at the very least undermine the allergic child’s sense of security in school environment (Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, Oct, 2010).

Chronic Fatigue: What is it and how to deal with it

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) can happen to anyone. It’s not ‘just another form of depression’ but instead a debilitating illness that permeates into every area of your life. It is a fatigue which cannot be explained by physical or psychiatric means. With over 80% of cases starting in the immediate aftermath of a viral infection, CFS can significantly impact an individual’s life at any stage.

As we understand more about CFS, there are guidelines have been developed for international consistency in identifying CFS. Read more to learn about these guidelines at http://www.joefitzgibbon.ie/chronic-fatigue/

Principles of a Healthy Diet

You’ve heard it said before that a healthy diet is all about balance. Some live by the 80/20 principle, others follow paleo or ketogenic diet plans, but ultimately, too much or too little of anything can lead to nutritional problems. There is no one-size-fits-all plan, but we’ll take a look at several key principles that medical professionals agree constitute a balanced diet.

Although still the subject of hot debate, the three key principles that traditionally guide a balanced diet are:

1. Major on the carbohydrates
2. Go easy on the fat
3. Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables
