Basic Information

Sid Hearn is Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Bands at Marian University. He directs the "Marching Knights" and teaches trumpet, instrumental arranging, marching band techniques, and in January 2010 will revive the "Brass Knights" brass ensemble. Dr. Hearn comes to Marian University from Auburn University where he taught instrumental, music education, and technology courses in the Music Department and College of Education, and supervised student teachers in elementary, instrumental, and vocal music. His experience in the public schools of Alabama includes posts as Director of Bands at Falkville High School, Northside Middle School, and Deshler High School.

Sid is invigorated by the research process, and his research interests include recruitment and retention of music teachers and technological applications to music education, including distance learning. He has completed several studies with his friend and mentor, Dr. Kimberly C. Walls, and presented research at professional conferences across the country.

Dr. Hearn received the Bachelor of Music in Music Education from the University of North Alabama (1997) and the Master of Education (2004) and Doctor of Philosophy (2009) degrees from Auburn University. He studied trumpet with Dr. Ramon Vasquez at Auburn University, and Dr. Edd Jones at the University of North Alabama. Sid studied arranging with Dr. Johhnie Vinson, and wind conducting with Dr. Rick Good, who offered him the unprecedented opportunity to write and rehearse the 2005 Nokia Sugar Bowl Half-time.

Sid brings to Marian an extensive background of over seventeen years performing and teaching in the pageantry arts. Dr. Hearn maintains an active schedule as a consultant, adjudicator, designer, presenter, and guest conductor across the Midwest and Southeast. Since he began performing on mellophone with the Colts Drum and Bugle Corps from Dubuque, Iowa in 1992, he has continued to actively perform, teach, design, and adjudicate bands, drum corps, and winter guards across nation. Particularly interested in movement, Sid's pageantry teaching experience includes Spirit of Atlanta, Colts, Boston Crusaders, numerous marching bands and winter guards across the Southeast. With the creation of the Marian University "Marching Knights," Dr. Hearn hopes to develop an innovative and unique marching program that remains loyal to the rich history and tradition of college bands, while leading the nation's high school and college bands into the next era of evolution.
