The best approach I've seen is to hold student-led parent conferences. Parents learn a great deal from these - and multiple sessions can be conducted at once, so the teacher isn't overloaded. Further, it's a great, authentic writing/speaking activity for the students, and gives them a sense of meaningful accountability.

Here's the link at http://teachersspeakup.com to this week's Sun-Times teacher essay. Now teachers who I have not recruited myself are beginning to write -- which is just what we need!

Sites of the National Writing Project, such as ours -- the Illinois Writing Project -- have been doing this work of teaching writing for years. While we can't "instruct" kids on every element, we can indeed set up the conditions for learning, and provide guidance as experienced writers and readers -- as you describe, Russ. In addition, publishers like Heinemann and Stenhouse have been for years providing professional books that help teachers do this work. It's not a mystery. But it is artful. And the biggest problem with the Common Core writing standards (which are far better than those for reading)? They're JOYLESS.

Teacher Appreciation Day - Yeah, right. But it's up to us, the teachers, to explain to people all that we do that deserves real appreciation.
