Well, if all this has got your curiosity up, I've done my job. Here's a story from one of those airmen. Take a moment to read his story and give thanks to those that went before us.

Over Target Zone!

Bombadier +Erik Tenkar lets the bombs go and hits 30% of the target airfield. We bank and turn back for home.

But look out, here come more fighters! 2 waves.

Concentrated fighter fire delivers our first serious hurt! They spray "Smashing Time" down....

Co-Pilot +Brad Black takes another light wound. (Just like in Mission 1)
Waist area of the ship takes the worst.. sadly both waist gunners +Cliff Weaver and +Paul Wolfe are KIA!
Even tail gunner +Chris Mata takes a SW (Serious Wound.)

We fly on after the fighters break off into Zone 4. More gun jams and one gun unjammed with all misses around.

Continue on into Zone 3, Zone 2 with more fighters. We take friendly fire from the tight formation we are flying in.

Fighters miss and are driven off by other B-17s.

Another gun in unjammed and finally we land, finishing Mission 2 with some crewman losses.

Tail Gunner +Chris Mata's war is over, he is shipped back home and recovers from his wounds.

Zone 5. Here they come boys.. 2 waves of enemy fighters

We open up the machine guns.. and I don't know who provided maintenance on these guns or the belts of ammo but a lot of gun jams!!

Bombadier +Erik Tenkar mans the nose gun and jams his guns.
Navigator +Jason Hobbs fires the stb cheek gun and jams
Radio Room gunner +Todd Sprang fires and jams.

4 enemy fighters inbound, 3 miss and 1 registers 2 hits but they have no effect!

2nd Attack from Wave 1

1 Enemy fighter which is driven off.

Wave 2 Attack 1: 5!! enemy fighters

Fighter cover is good but only drives off 1, leave 4 to attack us.

Tail Gunner +Chris Mata does a good job and scores his second kill!

Gun jams prevent us from firing. Fighters attack and deliver Oxgen hit in tail gunner section and take out the tail control cables. The rest is superficial damage.

Wave 2 Attack 2 and Attack 3!

More fighters. See the 3rd screen shot. More damage inflicted as we pretty much can't fire back due to gun jams.

Tail turret inoperable. Port elevator inoperable. Rudder takes a hit and more superficial damage.

Still in Zone 2 after the Red Tails chased off 3 enemy fighters. Starboard Waist Gunner +Cliff Weaver fires and misses the Me109 coming in at 1:30 Level.

The Me109 misses us and we fly on through Zone 3 and get jumped in Zone 4. 4 more fighters and the Red Tails only chase off 1.

Navigator +Jason Hobbs fires and misses the FW190 at 12 oclock level.
Port Waist Gunner +Paul Wolfe holds the trigger down and spray fires causing the FW190 at 9 o'clock high to break off its attack!
Starboard Waist Gunner +Cliff Weaver jams the guns!
Top turrent gunner +Eric Hoffman jams his guns too.
Ball turret +James Tubb misses the FW190 at 3 low.

The 3 fighters miss and tail gunner +Chris Mata misses as one fighter flies by from front to back.

On to Zone 5 next!

Mission 2 is up. So, when I was rolling up the squadron I didn't realize at the time the 15th Air Force is stationed in Italy for missions in 1943. Fix? We move to Italy boys, and it's later in the war. 15th Air Force, 301st Bombardment Group, 32nd Bomb Squadron. You can get these cool Squadron assignment sheets off of Board Game Geek under the B-17 files section. The header on my collection is a picture of the B-17 from this Squadron.

One more fix. Had one too many crew, so +Jonathan Henry is on stand by. He'll be first up in case of losses.

MISSION 2. New B-17F! Assignment. Bomber name "Smashing Time". (These are real names of actual B-17s from WWII.)

Target: Klagenfurt - Airfield - Aircraft
Weather over target is Good with Medium Flak.

This one was a tough mission. I stopped counting how many waves of enemy fighters we ran into. It was a good thing we were being escorted by the Red Tails. That's right, the Tuskegee Airman escorted us in. They supposedly never lost a single bomber they escorted! The Germans definitely tried to change that in this alternate history run.

The plane takes off and we develop an Oil fire in Zone 2. We used up our extinguishers to put it out. OK, but here comes the first wave of fighters.

Our gunners whiff but not the enemy fighters! We take a hit to our landing gear and engine #4 is knocked out! Rest is superficial damage!

On passing by fire, Tail Gunner +Chris Mata takes out an enemy fighter to register our first kill!

I wasn't able to capture the next two screens, but we managed to make it over target and bombadier +Erik Tenkar manages to hit only 5% of the target. You can't blame him, there were thunderstorms over the target and at least he still hit something!

Return zones we get jumped by more fighters and they lightly wound waist gunners +Cliff Weaver Cliff and +Paul Wolfe.

We make it back to base, but the landing gear is shot under the left wing. Pilot and Co-pilot +Brad Black manage to land the damn plane but the "Lucky Partners" won't fly again. Crash landing!

All crew survive and await their 2nd plane! What will it be called?

Due to poor and bad weather while flying through Zones 1-5 it keeps enemy fighters at bay. Look out! Zone 7 brings in a wave of enemy fighters, 2 ME-109's and a FW190!
