Smart people who know things, what is the rectangular box on this pole for?

Don't you watch Person of Interest? It's a distribution point for The Machine. :)

My husband, who knows these things, says that the bulge on the wire to the left is a cable splice, and the box is the point where they connect the phone wire that goes to the nearby building, or to the next pole if that one's closer to the building.

The wire in the middle is the TV cable and the wire on top is probably just a wire that helps keep the poles up straight.

The best part of these conversations is that we usually have only a vague understanding of how it all really works.

Not cool Apple. Oh, well, I'll just keep watching Netflix, Google Play and all the other cool stuff I can get through my Chromecast.
Amazon has issued memos to merchants warning them that they will soon be unable to sell Chromecast and Apple TV on the mega-shop, and the excuse they gave for making the move is one of the dumbest things we've ever heard.

That's the way to do it! I wish we had a bagpiper at 18th and I in DC some mornings. Just saying.
Scotland had a problem: an angry street preacher turning on his PA in St. Andrews. A local picked up his bagpipes to drown out the noise. Now Scotland has two problems. The Courier's Richard Rooney...

The power of mathematics is mind boggling.
The "set of all sets that do not contain themselves" is the basis of Russell's Paradox, which dealt a devastating blow to the projects of Russell and Frege in grounding all of mathematics in pure logic. Voldemort is roughly representing Frege, who was devastated upon hearing from Russell about ...

Do we really want to know?

Some things never change. Scroll all the way down.
If you've been scouring Apple's support pages lately, you might have come across this rather curious representation of Microsoft's Windows OS. Sitting alongside Apple's official logos for iOS 8, OS...

This totally sucks.
Ever since the release of iOS 9, the tech media has engaged in a collective cryathon over the software's support for ad blockers that will put major dents in our revenue streams. At the same time, ...

Mandarin Orange Chicken salad is great. The patio was pleasant. Good place to bring an out of town friend.

Awesome sandwiches and soups... and breads and pastries. We like to pick up our food and picnic at Fogland Beach. If only Provender were open all year round.

Nice classic mocha. Not too sweet, slightly bitter cocoa. Perfect of a cold Saturday afternoon. Not too crowded.
