This is why Antitrust is still important in a technologically oriented society. Just a few years ago, AT&T tried to buy TMobile. The Obama Department of Justice blocked the acquisition arguing that the acquisition would deprive consumers the benefit of much needed competition. (To be fair, I suspect that the Bush administration would have blocked this deal as well).

Anyway, skip ahead a few years and we see that TMobile, the Maverick provider, has forced Verizon and AT&T to compete.
