This is the cutest!!! I must admit, if in the same situation, I would have been the same way. If I met these people on the street today I would not know who they were or that they were even famous. ;-) Too cute!

My One and Only Baseball Story

And, actually, it’s really funny that I even have a baseball story because I don’t know anything about baseball. Nothing, nada, zip! (Well, I was pretty sure that most of the players were short but that’s all I thought I knew about baseball.)

So a few years ago (as I was visiting with some friends of ours) I mentioned that I had never been to a pro baseball game. Now, to most of my friends, that wouldn’t have been interesting but these particular friends were FLOORED! In fact, they actually seemed insulted. You see we had been friends for years and so, of course, I knew my girlfriend’s husband was a professional baseball player but, beyond our daily lives of playing in the yard with our kids, attending parties together or gathering around the kitchen counter for coffee, I really hadn’t given much thought to his profession and I guess they just assumed I knew more about baseball than I did.

After he stopped clutching his heart in (feigned) shock our friend says: “Okay, we’re coming here for Spring training (he was playing with the New York Yankees at the time) so you’ll have to come with the family to watch a game!” Great! I have fun just hanging around the kitchen counter with these people so going to a game where I can root for my friend should be a blast—I’m in!

Now I will tell you the rest of this story as I told it to my husband +Scott Kelby that night after the game.

Wow Honey—baseball is such a great game! I met a lot of really nice people that made me feel so welcome. Scott replies: “Really, that’s great honey, glad you had a good time. So, what was it like?”

Well, we had great seats, in the family section, right behind the catcher. We talked and talked and laughed and talked and ate hot dogs and watched fireworks after the game and… Scott interrupts and asks: “Uh, honey, did you actually watch any of the game? Who won?” Uhhhh…hmmm…well, I think the Yankees—but I’m not sure. (Insert a mental picture of my husband shaking his head, in disgust, here.)

I continued…
So after the game we went to the family area underground (to wait for the players). It was a very stark area made almost entirely of concrete. To which my husband utters: (with his head in his hands) “You mean, the tunnel?” I say: Come to think of it, it was very tunnel like.

I continued again…
As the players came pouring out a few of them stopped to talk to my girlfriend but one of them, after finishing his conversation with her, walked over and introduced himself to me. My first thought was, hang on a second, this guy isn’t short—in fact he’s super tall! (Turns out I knew less about baseball than even I thought.) Anyway, we had the nicest little chat. He was very polite and at some point in the conversation asked if I had enjoyed the game? I had had such a great time that I meant it when I told him that baseball might be my new favorite sport! For some reason that made him chuckle, shake my hand and thank me for coming. We talked a bit more small talk until his wife and family came and collected him. Anyway, after he left, my girlfriend came over and asked me if I knew who I had been talking to? I said: Well, he said his name was Alex. And she says: “Yes, as in Alex Rodriguez.” I just stared at her with a blank look and said…okay. Then, she says: “You know, A – R o d!” To which I respond (with a puzzled tone): ohhhh…kaaayyy? (At that moment I realize our “speak” to one another had gotten to the point that each syllable was slowed down as to indicate that one of us was mentally challenged.) Then she practically yells at me “For God’s sake Kalebra, he’s only the most famous player in the history of baseball!!” Oh…well he seemed very nice. Can you believe she rolled her eyes and started laughing as she simultaneously shoved me down the “tunnel.” Seriously!

When we started out of the “tunnel” I found myself walking next to yet another giant and all I’m thinking is how funny it is that I was so wrong about baseball player height. And even though he’s talking on his cell phone, he still finds the polite time to smile and say hello—how’s it going, while nodding his head and raising his eyebrows as if to say “dumb phone call.” Anyway, as we exit, all these flashes start going off and everyone starts yelling!! I quickly turn to my girlfriend and ask: why is everyone yelling Jeter at me?! She shouts over the din: “Geesh! They aren’t yelling at you! They’re yelling at him!” (The tall guy I walked out with?!) I shout back: well, they seem to like “him” very much! She answers: “Yeh, I guess so Kalebra—his last girlfriend was Mariah Carey.” Oh, I say, maybe that’s who he was talking to on the phone.

Now, I don’t know when this happened to Scott but at some point during my story his mouth had fallen open (like a kind of cartoon character) and was now stuck in that position. In fact he couldn’t say anything for quite some time—but I do believe I saw a tear or two. He’s such a good listener and, clearly, he was very moved by the fact that my girlfriend and I had had such a good time—what a sweetie. :)

It wasn’t until the following week that I realized what celebrities they were
Because Scott and I were on the couch watching TV when a yogurt commercial came on and I recognized the main character as one of the guys I had met a few weeks earlier. I turned to my husband and said: Honey, that’s one of the guys I met at the game! How about that, he’s in a yogurt commercial! Scott looked me straight in the eyes and then stood up and walked out of the room without saying a word.

Well I never!
