The study ranked South Dakota as the safest state for kids online, followed by Vermont and North Dakota. Arizona was ranked the most dangerous state for kids online, followed by Colorado and Virginia.

“People who are bullies use social media to one-up someone else,” says Rahul. “We just wanted to tell people that this is not okay and we wanted to speak up. For any kind of social change we need to have someone who speaks up first. We wanted to be ‘the people’ who speak up,” he adds. The group had also set up online platforms where people could share their experiences anonymously.

Last week the mayor posted a video to his Facebook page condemning the content and comments posted to Saving Safety Harbor’s Facebook page. He told the commission Monday that video spurred other residents to report similar complaints of harassment and bullying from Schellenberg and Facebook commenters.

Lucido said his bills would be an added tool for law enforcement to combat cyberbullying. Just as schools have a zero-tolerance bullying policy on school grounds, the bills (if they become law) could give law enforcement an opportunity to stop bullies.

One nurse she spoke to faced five years of defamation, false sexual allegations, and breaches of privacy. That nurse had her addresss and phone number posted on a public blog then had strangers call her up.
