+Andrew Malcolm New years offer the chance to start over. The key is to start with a blank sheet not simply rework an old speech. I'll remain optimistic until I hear the first reference to "elections have consequences".

Well intentioned politicians can disagree about the "right way" to manage our country. But we must not fool ourselves that we can break our addiction to overspending by simply slowing the growth in the amount we overspend each year.

The first sentence I would right on the blank sheet would be: "I promise to spend less today than I spent yesterday. And I will do so every day until the amount I spend each day is equal to (or less than) the amount that was spent on __ (fill in the blank)."
