10 Tips to Winterize Your Home:

1. Remove dead or broken branches from any trees on your property, especially those which hang over your home, vehicles, walkways, decks, garages, and utility lines. Snow accumulation especially in the fall and spring can cause profound damage to utilities and your home.
2. Clean out your gutters so snow and ice don't build up along your roof lines. Remove debris such as fallen branches and replace loose shingles. Not only can the ice and snow building up on your roof injure people walking under eves and along walkways, but when ice and snow dams fall, they can break windows, destroy siding, decks, walkways and do considerable damage to your home.
3. Clean out your chimney and keep a pile of wood on hand in case of emergency. Although many of us rely on other forms of heat for our homes, if you have a chimney, be sure that you are prepared in the event of utility outages during the cold winter nights. The last thing anyone wants are frozen pipes, a chimney fire, or a freezing house.
4. Replace old or rotted weather striping, seals, and insulation along windows, doors, around pipes, and along other places cold air might creep into your home. Not only will this help keep your home warmer, it will save in expensive heating bills. Studies show that up to 30% of a home's heat can be lost through cracks and drafts along windows and doors. Proper prevention can save as much as 50% in heating bills.
5. Check your heating system. Hire a heating professional before the cold weather sets in. Vacuum vents and replace furnace filters, and invest in an alternative heating source. Make sure your heating professional inspects everything to prevent against Carbon Monoxide and other unsafe conditions. Be sure your home is equipped with Carbon Monoxide detectors, and lots of extra blankets.
6. Winter is one of the highest risk times of year for home fires, so make sure all fire alarms work and that you have certified and operational fire extinguishers throughout your home and in visible locations. Plan a fire evacuation procedure with your family, and prepare for being left stranded out in the cold weather.
7. Prepare a winter family emergency pack. Ice and snow storms can close entire towns down and with very little warning. An emergency pack can be the difference between survival for you and your family. For basic info on what to include in a kit, follow this link for disaster supply kit recommendation from The Weather Channel. http://www.weather.com/life/safety/homesafety/article/disaster-supply-kit_2011-10-10
8. Be proactive about your plumbing. Colorado is notorious for extreme temperatures. Shut off the supply of water and drain outdoor spigots, swamp coolers, and sprinkler systems before freezing. Cover your air conditioner or swamp coolers to protect them from the weather.
9. Keep walkways clear of ice and snow. Invest in methods of ice melt and several snow shovels. If you have a long driveway, consider investing in a snow blower, plow or setup an agreement with someone to plow your driveway regularly. Winter is one of the most common times of year for lawsuits as a result of people slipping and falling in entrances and walkways.
10. Maintain good lighting in your yard and along pathways. In the winter the days are much shorter. Often you will find yourself leaving home before the sun has come up and getting back after the sun has set, so be sure your home and yard is well lit. If you will be putting up lights this year, think about doing so earlier on, before the snow and ice has built up. Electricity and water do not mix, and snow and ice is a form of water, so keep that in mind. Also, roofs are never a safe place to work, but especially during the winter months, so just be careful and use your head.
