After almost three weeks of absence I am returning. During this time I moved from my home of 33 years(Texas) to a new place Maine, actually I am on my way to Canada. This was an expensive($13K), dangerous(driving 2400 miles during 6 days) with 22 cats(10 of them were very unhappy) & an exhausted companion; it took the toll both physically & emotionally. The best part is we arrived safe. My special thanks are to the Motel chain of La Quinta, if it was not for their friendly policy for animal lovers we could have been doomed. Every evening I had to spend 3 hours unloading my babies & every morning 4 hours to load them back in the truck, it was back breaking. During all this time I thought about all the refugees(including my parents) who had to leave their homes & go to a new place which they had never seen before. I was thanking my lucky stars that our move was like a luxury cruise as compared to their painful journeys.

I did not think much about destiny but probably there is some thing like that. We left India to have a life of dignity, then we left Sind to save our lives, then I left Pakistan in search of freedom, arrived the ultimate land. This is our election year & I am reading some politicians plans which are scaring me. They sound like shaved fundamentalists who may convert this Land of free to a land of their vision.
god bless America & rest of the world.

Actually, your few posts on our situation on earth are reminding me of Jared Diamond thoughts especially in his last book, Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed
Have you read it ?

Sincerely, I have thought about how societies fail or thrive(every society eventually collapses) but I am not a historian. I happened to be both a professional & academic geologist. Teaching geology it is a different ballgame. You are out there facing the inquisitive brains(not all of them) who can ask you all kinds of questions whether you thought about them or not. I have taught Environmental geology & Historical geology for > 25 years, before that I was a professional geologist. I can say unless I started teaching geology I was not a thoughtful geologist.
Today, I look at this Earth differently, I have thought how it has changed & will keep on changing. This Earth was not created for us, the fact is we will not be in this form & shape in 2 million years from now; if you have difficulty in believing me then just look at Lucy’s bones.
I am keenly aware of the extinctions of Trilobites, and certain other organisms who multiplied so fast that they wrote their own obituary (I have the rock samples to demonstrate it).
I hardly see any reasonable(read rich, famous, and influential) person talking about the negative effects of human population growth. .
In geology there is a term species competition, it means different species compete for the same resources & some species wipe out others. This is happening right now. This Earth is witnessing a major mass extinction which started 10,000 years ago.
This is extremely frightening if you think about the future of mankind (of course, other species too). Every one needs nonrenewable geologic resources(which with the passage of time are disappearing), environmental pollution is increasing, natural vegetation is disappearing, and there is a wild card of climate change; if anyone thinks that this Earth will always enjoy the same weather is clueless. Once I heard a moron from Louisiana on TV saying what is this fuss about mass extinction, life goes on…., the earth did not disappear when dinosaurs vanished, why do we need all this riffraff around? All we need is some chickens, cows, & pigs and the life will be just fine.

I have retired and I am thinking about what to do next. Go for a Ph.D, learn French and Persian, play music, learn how to sail, and somewhere in the future go after Somali Pirates.

Story
Introduction
Life has taught me one-thing, respect life. Being a Geologist & after teaching this subject for 27 years I had to think hard about the beliefs I was taught and what I was observing. Beliefs had to go. Definition of life is not as simple as many would think. Another aspect of this learning is to realize there are 5/6 kingdoms of life, and at the bottom we have same root stock. To keep the current session simple we can just look at the animal kingdom. Compare yourself with a creature who once lived & now a piece of which is in your stomach being digested. Did that creature had 2 eyes, a nose with 2 nostrils, a spinal chord, a heart, 2 lungs, a stomach, a brain which was brutalized at the time of slaughter, & blood which came out of its body was red? Just the coincidences! How convenient it is to justify your existence? I can take this narration to the other levels of science & philosophy but for now I will let you digest what ever you ate today.
Bragging rights
This is just dumb, only stupids brag.
