TIPS ON PRUNING PLANTS (5) – LANDSCAPING BIRMINGHAM AL - LAWN CARE BIRMINGHAM AL

The following are some ideas about when to prune plants in your landscape Birmingham AL:
Late winter or early spring, before bud break, is usually the best time to prune many shrubs.
However, delay pruning most spring blooming shrubs until after flowering.  If you prune them soon before they flower, you will cut back on the amount they will flower.
Pruning during the summer will help suppress growth of suckers and foliage.
Shrubs that bloom in the summer should be pruned in early spring prior to bud set.  You can also them after they have flowered.

MANAGING THATCH (1) – LANDSCAPING BIRMINGHAM AL - LAWN CARE BIRMINGHAM AL

GARDNER LANDSCAPING – BIRMINGHAM AL

Numerous studies have shown that removing grass clippings (bagging) does not prohibit the buildup of thatch.
Clippings don’t cause thatch.  Improper soil pH causes thatch, by not allowing it to properly decompose.  That is why it is important to lime a yard in the winter.
Over fertilizing, over watering and compacted soils are the leading causes of thatch.
There are three conditions when you should bag your grass clippings:
Spring cut back
Excessive clippings (mowing more than 1/3 of height)
Severe disease problems
Otherwise it is best to recycle the clippings.
A shallow layer of thatch around the base of grass plants acts as a natural mulch to retain moisture and lower soil temperature.  It cushions the plant’s crowns and discourages germination of weed seeds.
Excessive thatch (greater than ½” to ¾”) inhibits water penetration into the soil, harbors insects and diseases, and leads to shallow root systems susceptible to heat, cold, and drought.

TIPS ON PRUNING PLANTS (4) – LANDSCAPING BIRMINGHAM AL - LAWN CARE BIRMINGHAM AL

The following are some ideas for renewal pruning of plants in your landscape Birmingham AL:
Older shrubs often grow too large for their surroundings and require drastic pruning.
The best time for drastic pruning is just before bud break in early spring.
Not all shrubs can handle drastic pruning.
For shrubs that can handle extreme pruning and where you do not mind the shrub being basically gone until it regrows, many remove the entire plant 6 to 10 inches above the ground.
Another technique to keep the renewal pruning from appearing so drastic is to drastically trim a few branches at a time over two to three years.  You will be taking out the old growth each time.  Concentrate on the undesirable and over-grown branches.

Deciduous shrubs require maintenance pruning to keep them healthy and keep them in shape.
Remove dead, diseased, or broken branches.
To reduce the height of shrubs with a Cane Growth, remove the tallest canes by cutting them off near ground level.  You can also thin out any canes crowding the center or those growing in unwanted directions.
To reduce the height of shrubs with Mounding Growth, prune the longest branches. Make thinning cuts inside the shrub where they will not be visible.
When pruning shrubs with tree-like growth, also remove suckers that originate from the roots.  If it is thick you should thin out some of the internal branches.
