Difficulty in chewing often results from changes to the mouth, jaw, or tongue. Cancer, especially oral and oropharyngeal cancers, may cause this. Difficulty chewing can also be a result of cancer treatment. These side effects of cancer treatment can cause chewing problems:
• Mucositis
• Xerostomia

Cold sores are caused by a contagious virus called herpes simplex virus (HSV). There are two types of HSV. Type 1 usually causes oral herpes, or cold sores. Type 1 herpes virus infects more than half of the U.S. population by the time they reach their 20's. Type 2 usually affects the genital area. There are treatments to alleviate cold sores, call our office for more information.

Something stuck in your teeth? Grab a glass of water. A few swishes of very warm water can almost always do the trick, but any liquid would help. If you’re at home and struggling with a large, painful piece wedged in your gum line (like popcorn shells), try adding salt to the water to help reduce any swelling.
