While the primary residence of Scottish kings was Edinburgh Castle, they also built Stirling Castle in the 16th century as a secondary fortress and residence. Most Scottish kings and queens spent at least part of the year at Stirling Castle and the King's Inner Chamber was more like a palace than a traditional castle. This is the ceiling of the King's Inner Chamber which as been restored to its original condition. It clearly is a statement about the power and wealth of the Scottish royal family.

Whenever I am driving on a photo trip I like to stop and take photos when I find a scene I like. I took this photo when we were driving back from the Orkney Islands to Inverness. I like the gorse blooming on the hillside and the road leaing down to the North Sea. The Scottish Highlands are sparsely populated and there were wonderful views especially on the coast!

One cannot visit Scotland and not join a whiskey distillery tour. I visited several distilleries on my trip to Scotland, but many do not permit photos inside their properties. Fortunately, Glenfiddich did not have any rules prohibiting photography so I was able to make this image when I joined their tour. I like these very impressive whiskey stills and the leading lines of this image which make you want to step into this wonderful space.

This is St. Magnus Cathedral in Kirkwall, the largest town in the Orkney Islands. The cathedral was originally constructed in the 12th century when Orkney was part of the kingdom of Norway. This impressive, Romanesque church was one of the most impressive buildings we saw on our trip to Scotland.

This is Eilean Donan Castle in the Scottish Highlands located near the Isle of Skye. It was originally constructed in the 13th century, but was largely destroyed during the Jacobite Rebellion in the 18th century and was rebuilt in the early 20th century. This is one of the most iconic and well photographed locations in Scotland and it lived up to its reputation. It is such a beautiful old building in a picturesque location. We really enjoyed our visit there!

When I am out photographing I always try to look for subjects that would make interesting abstract images. The details are often a good place to look. This is a closeup shot of lichen I found growing on a standing stone on the Orkney Islands. These stones were erected more than 4,000 years ago so the lichen has had plenty of time to establish this little colony. I like the mixture of shapes and color in this image.

On our trip to Scotland earlier this year we ventured up to the Orkney Islands which are located above the northern tip of the Scottish Highlands. These are the Stones of Stenness which are thought to date back to 3100 BC in the neolithic age. While their original purpose is not known, scholars believe they were used as a ceremonial site similar to Stonehenge and most likely predate Stonehenge by several centuries. I thought it was interesting that sheep were allowed to graze near this very important archaeological site. I like the setting sun peeking through the clouds in this image.

Oaxaca is know for its multiethinic culture so one night we went to see a folk dance show at a local hotel when we visited several years ago. I decided to use a slow shutter speed to capture some motion blur shots. The dancers were wearing long colorful skirts which they would twirl around with their dance moves. I like the the movement of the twirling skirts and the dancers hands in this shot.

This is a statue of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founding shogun of the Tokygawa Sogunate which ruled Japan from 1600 to the mid-19th century. The statue is in the Toshogu Shrine in Nikko, Japan which is dedicated to the Tokugawa family. He certainly is an imposing figure and it is easy to imagine that he ruled Japan with an iron fist. I like the selective focus of this image which focuses attention on the statue against the out of focus background.

This is the Toledo Metro Station in Naples, Italy. I saw some photos of this unusual metro station so I decided to check it out when we were in Italy several years ago. The Naples city government decided to redesign 14 metro stations each with a different theme. The theme of this station is water. As you can see the walls are covered in blue & purple tiles with an avant garde design. It was truly an amazing sight to see!
