Water is essential to our lives as humans. We can go without food for long periods of time but water sustains us more than anything else. But water can be chaotic, destructive and scary (ask any sailer, surfer or kayaker).

If you’ve had terrifying moments on water you know exactly what I am talking about. But, when you can stand with that powerful force and feel the energy the exhilaration is overwhelming. Water has the ability to draw us closer where moments happen on the edge of danger and excitement.

Fire is hypnotizing and confounding. It’s nature’s alchemy right in front of our eyes. Most of our physical world is static but fire doesn’t fall in-line with this state.

We’ve accepted that it’s always changing and rather magical, how we can create light and warm from simply rubbing sticks together or creating a spark. I believe we have evolved because of fire, our companion in the night through the ages.

This has been my favourite hobby as of late. I'm getting more comfortable with sailing over the past month. Due to the amazing weather we've been having and access to my friends boat in Nelson, we've been out more than I ever have before. Sometimes it means relaxing in the hammock slung from the mast or being absolutely gripped as water rushes over the rails while we're sloped at 35°. Either way, I'm hooked.

I like to imagine the forces that shaped the landscape over millennia; tectonic shifts that created mountains, the elements that wore away rock, the glaciers that shaped valleys and the rivers that carved intricate patterns of paths downhill. Through the ages, the chaos of these forces remarkable creates in a way that cannot be matched by humans. Beauty out of chaos on a time-scale we are unable to comprehend.

Getting to these places isn’t always easy (pushing bikes for hours - no sleep on a mountain peak - waking up at 4am) but they are worth it when everything comes together. It’s always a lottery when chasing the sun.

As I work endlessly in my office this spring (my usual after a busy winter) my mind floats back to moments like this in Valhalla Park last summer. When I look back at my images, sometimes it's hard to believe that I experienced those moments at all. I spend so many hours editing, reviewing, sending to publications that the image occasionally becomes a commodity more than a representation of a time and place. But many times, as with this shot, images that sit forgotten on my hard drives become my favourites as they are untainted by my process of business. Either way, I feel quite fortunate to call this my job and I wouldn't change it for anything else.

I don't know about you, but I love road tripping in my truck. There's something about having a self-contained unit that I can take wherever, able to get up almost any road and not worrying about a roof over my head or where I'm going to sleep that night. It opens up a whole new freedom which I have become addicted to in the summer.

This summer, Kendra Perry and I will be seeing more of Canada and the US than ever before. From the BC Coast to the southwestern USA, you will probably find us climbing, biking, hiking or sleeping in my trusty steed under the stars.
