70-millisecond accuracy over the life of the universe. Not too shabby!

I've just spent 3 days going through a crash course in SWIG, the Python and Numpy API's, and remembering how to program in C. Surely there is an easier way to pass to C a python list of strings and a numpy array or two...

For some reason, I never knew about the snowflake work in the 1950's.
Some snow flakes shapes are so complex that no computer model has ever been able to generate them. Until now. Back in 1954, the Japanese physicist Ukichiro Nakaya published a landmark study on the nature of snowflakes. He classified flakes into various categories and even discovered how to grow them in laboratory conditions, the first time this had been done. Nakaya discovered snow flakes form when supersaturated vapour cools below zero but als...

Thought you might enjoy this, +Matthew Bellis
Under certain market conditions, cartels arise naturally without collusion. This raises important questions over how the behaviour should be controlled The price of gas is a puzzle. Monitor the average price in gas stations in a particular city and it will vary dramatically, sometimes in a matter of hours and often in ways that appear cyclical. Economist have long scratched their heads over this kind of pattern. One explanation is that this beha...

Ooh, interesting! I want more time to muck with agent-based modeling. This stuff is really cool.

Just upgraded to Ubuntu 11.10; Been using Ubuntu since Drapper Drake(6.06), and still wireless networking doesn't work out of the box.

Well, so far so good. I'm still not sure if it's real, but I feel like I gained some screen real estate. I also like the fact that Network Manager was fixed to once again scan and connect to wifi networks quickly after the computer wakes. On my old version, 10.04, that process would usually take a minute or more.

The task bar seems to be doing a good job suppressing annoying notifications as well. However, I feel like I need to do a bit too much digging to find other applications (like calculator!) that aren't on the task bar.

A conversation stream about open access scientific publishing (http://twitter.theinfo.org/154956242685669376) showcases what I find amazing and infuriating about Twitter: Direct access to people in high places, but lots of noise and garbled 140 character almost-statements.
