You might not recognize it, but this waterfall is the same one I last posted...within the majestic Waipi'o Valley is the majestic falls of Hi'ilawe on Hawai'i's Big Island.

A solo hula to the song Hi'ilawe   Queen Lili'uokalani Keiki Hula Competition, O'ahu Hawai'i

This is a shot from my current documentary project following eighteen 8 to 12 year old girls as they prepared for and competed in the prestigious Queen Lili'uokalani Keiki Hula Competition.  The project has been ongoing for 8 months now and just culminated with the competition this past weekend.  I am looking forward to the follow up piece now that the competition is finished.  These girls and their families make many sacrifices to learn Hawai'ian ways, values and history as it applies to their chants, dances and life in the halau (hula school).

Happy Aloha Friday!

Photographer. Just trying to see what I feel...with a camera.
Introduction

Aloha, I am a Hawaii-based Documentary/Ethno-Photographer who specializes in candid shots of local cultures, but also shoot lifestyle images, events, travel, nature...

As a Photographer, my journey began innocently in college when I was given my first camera (a yashica t4 film point and shoot) and started to travel abroad. This is the first time I ever felt like I had an artistic expression.  I was so excited.

Since then, I have experienced over 35 countries and worked a decade and a half in the field of Psychology.  Most all of my travels and social work experience has been "off the beaten path". I love going against the odds, the challenge of the unknown and getting lost.

Currently, my passion and focus is to witness and document cultural practitioners as they share a sense of place, connection and offering.

I think of the camera as a powerful tool that must be used carefully to do what is right.  Just trying to practice what I preach.....
