I dimly remember his conflict with the studio about how to cut American History X, but knew little more about director Tony Kaye until today. But this article:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/3665724/I-did-abominable-things.html

is full of astounding shit. With all the Bowie and Rickman anecdotes flying about, here's another take on an (still-living) artistic genius: more gonzo, practically discordian and more self-destructive than not.

There are many quotable moments, but I'll tease you with this:

"Kaye's behaviour became more extraordinary than ever. He argued with the agency McCann Erickson over the last few seconds of a Bacardi commercial. When they hired another director to reshoot the ending, Kaye sent his staff to the Dominican Republic to hide the people he'd photographed on the other side of the island. When the new director returned empty-handed, Kaye flew the Dominicans to the UK and paraded them outside McCann's London headquarters on a flatbed truck, accompanied by a 10-piece reggae band. 'I mean, mental. Mental... I'm very embarrassed. I did abominable things.'"

+Jason Morningstar was nerding about Kaleidoscope so I went ahead and bought it. Again, as it turns out; I bought it as soon as it came out. Perils of indie rpg collection.

Yesterday I took it over to some friends and we definitely got our 2 X $8 worth. For those who don't know, it's a game where you collectively reminisce about a weird (and actually imaginary) foreign film you watched together. Our premise of Game of Thrones mixed with Germany's Next Top Model was actually extremely close to the Hunger Games we realised; luckily, the lens of Belarussian Realist Noir took us off into its own territory.

Assassin wolves named after (and wearing) en-vogue lipstick shades was a highlight, as was the highly-charged argument about whether the director's real-life treatment of an actor to get the desired performance could ever be justified. After all, what's more important, reality or imagination? A topic close to the film's heart - it's original title 'The Wolf Cannot Ever Wear the Clothes of Belief', but you might know it in the US as 'The Power of Imagination: Fight for Your Reality.'

Fun, would play again. Kaleidoscope can be purchased here:

Stumbled across this from Dwight Macdonald, interviewed by Mike Tracy back in 1961. Found the last line especially interesting.

"This paper documents a marked increase in the all-cause mortality of middle-aged white non-Hispanic men and women in the United States between 1999 and 2013. This change reversed decades of progress in mortality and was unique to the United States; no other rich country saw a similar turnaround. The midlife mortality reversal was confined to white non-Hispanics; black non-Hispanics and Hispanics at midlife, and those aged 65 and above in every racial and ethnic group, continued to see mortality rates fall."

It struck me that some people might be interested in this research I wrote up recently, suggesting that a troubled or unpredictable childhood doesn't harm our cognition so much as shape it to fit the environment.

Our festival is almost here! Running around flyering, confirming schedules with visitors from NYC and SF, securing Arabian Nights-themed props, you name it, we're doing it.

The Würzburg festival quickly became my hands-down favourite event to take part in, so it's great to have a small hand in making it happen this year. #improv #impro
