"It's a shame that for so many people, learning stops when we finish high school or college."
Daphne Koller is enticing top universities to put their most intriguing courses online for free — not just as a service, but as a way to research how people learn. With Coursera (cofounded by Andrew Ng), each keystroke, quiz, peer-to-peer discussion and self-graded assignment builds an unprecedented pool of data on how knowledge is processed.

November Self Portrait Challenge Honorable Mentions

Here are the Honorable Mentions from the "Cinematic" November Challenge. You can see the Event and all of the submissions here: http://goo.gl/R6BksF

The photos attached to this post were considered finalist contenders but were not eligible to win prizes because either they were created by moderators (we play but we aren't eligible to win!) or these photographers have won sometime in the past 6 months. However, because these photos would go into the Finalists pool otherwise, I wanted them to get recognition, and so these are our Honorable Mentions. Well done! (Click to enlarge the photo and see who's tagged in them.)

photos are cropped for the purpose of the mosaic - you can (and should - it's particularly important for the "Cinematic" theme to see the full crop!) view the originals in the event linked above

Stay tuned to see who the fantastic finalists are…

Thanks to our November prize sponsors +Think Tank Photo, +SmugMug, +BorrowLenses.com, +500px, & +Capturing Couture! We love their products and services and appreciate their support. :)

The number of people dying from these drugs is second only to the number of people that die in car accidents

NPR Social Tools
New York Times reporter Barry Meier's new e-book explores opiate painkillers and the consequences that come with long-term use. He focuses in particular on OxyContin, how it came to be prescribed for chronic pain, what the consequences have been, and how it became a street drug.

Welcome to the future: NICE, Neuro-Inspired Computational Elements

"(Phys.org) —The brain's repute took a big hit in 1997 when an IBM supercomputer defeated world chess champion Gary Kasparov in a match reported around the world. But in the second round, the brain is back.

A Sandia National Laboratories-supported workshop in Albuquerque called NICE, for Neuro-Inspired Computational Elements workshop, discussed ways to use the brain's superior ability to send electrical signals along massively parallel channels, with multiple intersections at downstream nodes, to handle rapidly changing, high-volume information."

The Cry Of The Wolf

After the reintroduction of wolves into Yellowstone Park it has been shown they not only improved the whole ecology of the area they even changed the rivers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysa5OBhXz-Q

We need to understand that each creature on the planet is here for a reason, each one has a role to play on the earth and that roles is not for the amusement of humankind.

This is an Arctic wolf, on the decline through over hunting, will it be too late before we realise the role this wolf has to play in the sustainability of our planet?

From the Pythons' reformation to David Dimbleby's tattoo and Grayson Perry's dress sense, senior no longer means sensible. And why should it?

This study explores the possibility that lower general intelligence in childhood predicts greater racism in adulthood, and that this effect was largely mediated via conservative ideology.

What's invisible? More than you think - John Lloyd

I don't say this often.... This video will blow your mind.

Blow it.

I love spending time on the weekend watching videos with kids and one of our favorites are TedEd videos. This one is an animation of John Lloyd's talk. It is just 8 mins long, please watch it with your kids (if you are so blessed). There are so many incredible pieces of information, so many amazing questions. They'll stretch your mind.

And make sure you wait until the very end. There are two great closing postulations. You'll laugh. And think.
