Ruby, I have watched all of your videos, and wanted to tell you how profoundly moved I've been by your tremendous gift of spirit, courage, and love. (Ditto that for your clearly amazing mother and support network.) Your bravery and frankness is inspiring, and I cannot even begin to imagine the massive, positive impact you have had on so many...and will doubtlessly continue to have. What's more, your courage is raising awareness about an issue that so few seem to grasp...but because we are all privileged amount to have brilliant folks like you in this world, that is sure to continue changing for the better! Thank you...and so, so much more. <3

One of these random things I stumbled across on YouTube after being pointed to a video where the couple does their dance to a Body Combat track. This gave me a real laugh and smile; a reminder of what sharing love truly does mean, from familial to romantic to friendship. You'll love this.

"I see people who ought to be spending their time developing their craft, and people who used to be able to make a living as freelance writers, I see them making nothing and coerced into this constant self-promotion."--Franzen

Oh uh!

An extremely eye-opening look at sexism in the aviation industry. A must read. Truly.

Les Mills Body Combat and Body Pump have been absolutely tremendous for me. Not only do you get results (you get what you put in, and no, it doesn't come overnight, but you have to stick with it AND eat properly as well), but the positive effects the programs have had in diminishing my depression and anxiety have been truly amazing.

+Alex Straaik totally agree, i've been doing it in Ireland for 7 months now and not only have i lost 40 pounds but it's helped calm my mind and those happy endorphins released during the hour have helped with my anxiety too. It's intense but completely worth it.

This place is pretty great: excellent, highly accessible location, deeply affordable, decent business hours (open 7 days/week and on many federal holidays; they're open until 9pm on weekdays!), and overall a great facility for the price. Some of the machines are a little outdated, but they are clearly bettering the facility as the budget allows (e.g., the Y just got a new Lying T-Bar Row machine that's really wonderful). Between their offering of free weights and machines, the opportunity to work out exactly as you want is quite good. They also have a great variety of equipment for cardio, and an awesome staff who even care enough to ask for your television preference (and are also always ready and even eager to answer fitness and exercise questions). Considering the price point (and the free classes!), the YMCA is a wonderful value. I just purchased a Family Membership (for two students/workers, and received a very reasonable discounted rate) and am making great and very regular use of it. Definitely the best option, by far, near me.

What a fabulous hair salon! I am so glad I found this place, thanks to a tip from a good friend. After a less than stellar experience at Derailed--and being a recent Dayton transplant--I had no idea where I could go to get a sweet haircut from someone who would know how to deal with my wholly unruly cowlicks, give me suggestions on what slightly altered style would work with my facial structure, and keep it a bit funky. Well, problem solved. The answer is Studio Blue. Laura did my hair, and obviously knows what she is doing. Not only was she trained at the Aveda school, but she has an innate understanding of how to make someone's hair fit their overall look and personality quite well. After a brief conversation, she got to working her magic on my hair, and I left for the first time in a long while with a cut I was 100% satisfied with. Another awesome thing is that it is growing out extremely well, which is the mark of a schooled, skilled, and talented stylist. Ask for Laura for your cut and color needs (though everyone there seemed totally rad, and from what I've seen on Studio Blue's Facebook page, do incredible work too. You can't go wrong here). And not only was the cut great, but the price was definitely right; inexpensive, even, for the amount of care and time that was put into a short haircut. I will definitely be a regular here, and am happy to say I found my Dayton salon. Do yourself a favor and don't toss your money out the window elsewhere. For what you'd pay at some of the other salons in town for a cut and style, you can get color and highlights and everything...for under $100. Thank you for existing, Studio Blue. And for being close to my house. You rule.

Dr. Maria R. Burgio is NOT gay or trans friendly--or a decent therapist. She essentially does all of the talking, which is acutely inappropriate (including bragging about her medical accomplishments) and said some highly offensive and outrageously erroneous things regarding sexuality, and would not allow me to self identify. She is absolutely dangerous, especially considering the LGBT suicide rate. She told me, emphatically, that "bisexuality does not exist, (knowing I identity as bisexual), and stated that "you can get turned on by anyone," and as long as I "choose to live my life this way, [I] will not be able to overcome my Borderline traits." How outrageous and incorrect. Just wow. I was furious, and brought up Foucault, whom I did my dissertation on for graduate school and pretty much love, as well as the Kinsey scale, and she said that was "all 100% incorrect nonsense. You're either one or the other." Since I do not believe in the gender binary, I challenged her statements, causing her to refer to Intersex individuals and trans folks as "freaks of nature," and homosexuality as a "genetic flaw." Also, she was unfamiliar with most NYC hospitals and was asking me to write them down! I meant what? Do your own research! Hello! Absolutely disgusting. She should be avoided at all costs.
