I have spent a lot of time over the last 8 years contemplating what my business values are.

If you Google business values you will be provided with a lengthy list of lovely words that we all probably feel apply to us. Words such as integrity, empowerment, accountability, innovation, quality and respect. The list is endless and it is incredibly difficult to pin-point which of these words mean the most to you.

Values are important. They provide core principles and standards by which a business, and the people within the business, functions. They are meaningless however if your values and your behaviours are not aligned.

I recently discovered how important my business values are to me when they were challenged, and I had to literally fight to keep them at the centre of how I run my business. Throughout the whole experience, I had to constantly refer to my values and ensure that what I was doing and saying reflected what I believed was important to not only my business, but to me personally. It was an exhausting experience and one which without clear business values, I may have made decisions that I later regretted.

I can now reflect on my experiences and although I clearly made the right decisions, I will also learn from the mistakes I made – not communicating clearly enough and making assumptions that others knew what I wanted. After all, one of my values is continuous improvement so learning from mistakes is a key part of this.

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and for many of us romance will be on the agenda.

As well as romance some of us will be planning on building a business based on what we love to do, whether that is arranging flowers or building a multi-national business.  But can a passion turned into a business end up being a chore?

When it comes to technology I can be a bit of a Luddite.

Our work as Virtual Assistants is dependent on technology, indeed we wouldn’t exist without it. I do however sometimes dream of days gone by when carrier pigeons and quill pens meant that the world, and everyone in it, worked at a much slower pace.

Happy New Year!  I hope you have enjoyed a wonderful break and that your first few days back at work have been successful – only another 355 days to go until Christmas!

Like everyone I have been thinking a lot recently about what changes I want to make in 2016.  I don’t want to make the same mistakes I usually make, and resolve to achieve the unachievable, so I have decided to take some advice from Tim Sanders’ book Love is the Killer App and become a Lovecat!!

Welcome to the third of my top tips series on discipline for home workers.

Set goals

This is one of my favourite methods a home worker can use to stay motivated and focused. The psychological effect setting a goal has on your mind can’t be underestimated. Once you have a goal, you know where you’re going, what work you have to do, what steps you must take to get there and what challenges you will overcome.

The success of virtual teams in large corporate environments, such as software development, has been proven.

However, the principles behind that success apply in exactly the same way for working with smaller teams – partnering a successful micro-business with a Virtual Assistant.
