I just posted materials from a short course on algebraic modeling and the COIN-OR Optimization Suite. It introduces the COIN-OR Optimization Suite, discusses basic modeling concepts, and compares a few different modeling languages for interfacing with COIN-OR.

There is a petition circulating to require all journal articles arising from publicly funded research to be made available on-line. This makes sense.

I love this example of how the modeling process works. This article contains a very elegant description of how to analyze a real-world problem, model it, develop a useful abstraction, design a simple algorithm, tune the parameters, think about how different inputs will affect the results, and connect it all back to the real-world problem again. The title says it all. If you get a chance, check the rest of the rest of the Web site, too. Great design and a lot of interesting stuff there.

Lehigh is building a new High Performance Computing consulting team and we are currently searching for a team leader. This person would preferably have a Ph.D and would be working directly with faculty on computational research. Please share this with anyone you think might be interested and feel free to contact me for details.
