I just finished reading Bruce McCall's engaging and funny memoir Thin Ice: Coming of Age in Canada.  The ostensible frame of the book is that McCall is an American spirit trapped in a Canadian body and thus can't be happy 'til he grows up and moves across the border.  But the problems little Bruce faces go way beyond not fitting in with his national identity.  His parents, drunk or distracted, pay little attention to their six offspring, and Bruce, a boy who likes to draw and write and isn't good at sports, has trouble fitting in.  Pretty timeless and universal problems if you ask me.  Anyway, the book is one of those sad but also happy ones that are always the best.  #memoirs #books #canada
