When you say of Nabokov's 1962 novel Pale Fire that it is structured as a commentary to a fictional 1000-word poem by a character in the book, you haven't even started talking about what is strange, unnerving, funny, and even frightening about it.

I just reread it a couple of weeks ago. Honestly, there's not much to say except "it blew my mind."  Again.  After I finished, I was reminded why even though I read a lot of literature I seldom read about literature.

Ripe as this novel is for intellectual analysis (you can see some in this linked wikipedia page), I didn't want intellectual analysis.  I just wanted the strange unsettled feeling it gave me to linger a while before moving on, and leaving me aside with my everyday life.
