I live in the area and eat here only occasionally. I'll do a quick recap, because there is good and bad. The first time I walked in a few years ago after moving to the area, I was treated pretty rudely... well, maybe that's not the right word. They weren't nasty or "rude" but they were not friendly and really couldn't care less if I took a hike or got food. They served me quickly and without warmth and shooed me on out the door because it was near closing time. It was a long, long time before I went back. When I did, I was there with work colleagues and the food was awesome and service was acceptable, maybe even good. One of the guys in our group is a lifer in the area and he warmed them up a little. After that, it was very cordial, if not polite. Service was fine. Since then, I've been back several times and the iciness has definitely thawed. They actually remember me most of the time and serve me, are polite and generally remember where I work. If they don't, I say something local to them, ask about something to trigger their memory and it's all good again. I haven't really addressed the food. The chicken is spicy and delicious. At times, it is better than others. I've had it slightly overcooked before, but most of the time, it's spicy, juicy and spot on. The sides that come with the chicken are after thoughts. None of them are particularly good. All are acceptable. The idea is you're at Gus's to eat the chicken. They cook it fresh on a stove top with iron skillets. I rate their chicken very high. It's "real" and reminds me of a spicy version of my grandmother's recipe. The decor? Everybody says the same thing: hole in the wall. That sums it up, but hey, it's a fried chicken joint. I docked them a star because the owners/main employees can be frosty at times when dealing with new folks (some say white folks). I thought that, too, but over time, that has really changed. My guess is that they like dealing with folks they're comfortable with and who don't nit-pick. They do get a lot of pass-through traffic but it's locals who keep them in business. Gus's isn't for everyone. But I like it a lot. I'm headed there for lunch today and I look forward to it.

The chicken is second to none & this is the original! Service isn't very good, but I suppose great food takes time.

Definition of a hole in the wall dining experience. You don't come here for healthy, you don't come here for a fine dining experience. You come to the original Gus's for original down south fried chicken. The first bite always gets me with a perfect blend of spice. Kfc is garbage compared to Gus's. Everything is fried fresh, no heat lamps here. Perfect atmosphere for the fried chicken experience. This review applies to the Mason ,Tn location.

Proof that racial discrimination is alive and well. Drink never refilled, dry as a bone chicken. All because I'm white...

The problem that I have with this place—one I have not experienced elsewhere—is that they actually charge for ordinary tap water. As I recall, they refer to it as an ice charge, but you're charged $.50 whether you take ice or not. Strikes me as petty. The fried chicken is good, but too salty. It reminds me of the time in the Atlanta Underground when I ordered a hot dog and a Coke with no ice, They tried to charge extra for the Coke because I asked for no ice in it. In both cases, cheap management.
