Want a Czech spin on 'The Little Mermaid' story, one that showcases amazing voices, a tight knit New Orleans orchestra and the haunting sensuality of an enduring fairy tale? New Orleans Opera has you covered Friday (Nov 14) and Sunday (Nov. 16) with its first-ever production of Antonin Dvorak's 1901 masterpiece.

People-watching and playing ponies jockey for popularity when Starlight Racing comes to the New Orleans Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots. The historic track will launch its 143rd thoroughbred racing season with one of these popular, "dress to impress" night events, Nov. 21, 5 p.m. Starlight Racing looks different than a typical daytime event, often drawing a younger crowd with little previous exposure to horse racing.

Peter Yarrow of the folk group Peter Paul and Mary  is travelling to New Orleans, Nov. 15, to promote a new book, "Peter Paul and Mary: Fifty Years in Music and Life," (Imagine, $29.95). It's a lushly illustrated chronicle, showing how the group found its voice in the burgeoning Greenwich Village folk scene of the early 1960s, and how the trio joined with the powerful, progressive strain in American political life.

New Orleans Fringe Festival 2014 gives kids and families plenty of reasons to applaud with its free "Family Fringe" performances. Magicians, storytellers, puppeteers, tap dancers and other artists will take the stage in seventeen weekend shows, Nov. 22 and Nov. 23, noon to 5 p.m.

New Orleans Fringe Festival (Nov. 19-23) opens a door for performers and fans who want to share the latest in dance, puppetry, spoken word, stand up comedy, burlesque, circus arts and traditional theater. During the 2014 Fest, that door should feel just as big as New Orleans, able to accommodate 82 performing groups in 30 venues, a costumed foot parade, tours of yard art and free kids activities – all while bringing a vibrant pedestrian-centered street life to big swaths of Faubourg Marigny, Bywater and Central City.

Dance legend Wendy Whelan drew a thunderous, half-hour ovation from a glittering crowd at Lincoln Center this past month as she wrapped up her 30-year career at New York City Ballet. New Orleans will have a chance to cheer Whelan on Friday (Nov. 7) as she returns to the stage with Stars of American Ballet.
