Best boat rentals on the river and a family friendly campground with cabins available.

I came here to camp for the weekend and do a little fishing. Thought it would be a relaxing time but not hardly. The campgrounds were overrun with drunk, obnoxious, loud and borderline primitive people. A couple of goons in the campsite next to me set some pieces of railroad ties on fire and sent a thick smoke smelling of burnt tires through the campgrounds!!! I had to leave in the middle of the night for fear of asphyxiation. A couple of campsites had 6 or more cars parked in them and, needless to say, it was a drunken free for all both Friday and Saturday night, in spite of the no-alchoholic beverages policy and a 11 pm quiet time policy. I'm just glad I did not have my family with me. There is no oversight of the campgrounds what-so-ever as far as I could tell.

This place was TERRIBLE! The bus driver who drove us up the mountain (basically single lane rd) drove like a bat out of hell! As soon as he got up there, he barked some things at us and couldn't get out of there fast enough. After we located the tubes (under some trees strewn on the ground with dirt and everything all over them), we noticed how large they were! There was no way to orient yourself in the river, although he said we should stay on left side of the river (we were dropped off on the right side of the river). And the worst part about it all -- the nasty, stinky, moldy life vests! What on earth? They should allow those things to bake out in the sun after every use, or something! They gave all 3 of us rashes on our necks and shoulders. Completely bogus. The bathrooms were as nasty as the rest of the entire operation. Thankfully the wildlife wasn't too shy. Do yourself a favor and try another company.

We went kayaking through Hiwassee Outfitters a few weeks ago, and had a great time. I probably wouldn't bother writing a review here except that the previous review (by "mrs.diggs" claiming that it was terrible) made us a bit hesitant to do this trip, and I'm *so* glad that we decided to do it anyway. The service provided by Hiwassee Outfitters was perfectly adequate. This isn't fine dining, nor home improvement, nor car repair, etc; they're just renting you a boat/tube and then driving you upriver to the put-in spot. So really there isn't much "service" to speak of. In our case, the kayaks (Dagger Torrents) were great, and the bus driver was fine. We did bring our own life jackets, because wearing clothes (which is basically what lifejackets are) that have been worn by dozens/hundreds of strangers is just gross, regardless of who the outfitter is. But the main point is this: the Hiwassee River is absolutely gorgeous. It's crystal clear and beautiful, and the rapids were tons of fun. If we're ever even remotely close to Tennessee again, we'll gladly go back to Hiwassee Outfitters to do this river trip again.

The staff was great, we got there just in time to float the river. The campground was nice, the bath house was cleaner than I expected.
