I was shocked to read the previous reviews of guests of the Green Park Inn.Shocked until we looked at the DATES of those reviews, that is.The latest of the three reviews is 2009, the others being in 2007! Not only is it now LATE 2011, the Green Park is now under entirely different ownership. Having lived in three Historic Districts (Wilmington, NC, Savannah, GA, Detroit, MI), and renovated two of those, I have first hand experience of what is involved-albeit on a much smaller scale. It takes an additional amount of time due to the fact that many of the problems are hidden, intentionally or not, some due to age. It is hard to estimate the time, and local permitting and regulations can move at a very slow pace. Frequently local people, most well intentioned, question why and how things are being done-or should be done at all. The budget can be a moving target to say the least! My feeling is one of gratitude that the company that bought the Green Park property has essentially SAVED the Green Park Inn from the VERY real threat of demolition. Property in Blowing Rock, NC, comes a very high premium/price. It is the last remaining of the "grand" hotels there. Having stayed in Ritz Carlton's, The Jefferson Hotel in Richmond, VA, The Pinehurst Hotel, Pinehurst NC, THE Grand Hotel, Macinknac Island MI, etc. Please be aware that I understand a guest's PERCEPTION that The Green Park would be comparable. It never was like that, and in fact is being renovated to the general style of the time when it was built in the late 1800's. Are the visible pipes pretty? No, but that is what it was like! Given time, the physical facility will continue to improve. Our visit there in mid-May, 2011 was excellent. The staff was VERY good at keeping my secret! It was our wedding anniversary as well as my husband's birthday. I managed to make a reservation without it appearing on my credit card, made difficult as my husband monitors our accounts daily very carefully due to the ever present threat of identity fraud and theft. While we had been watching the progress of the Inn's "new lease on life", the impetus of my choosing the Green Park had another side. My parents, from Virginia-as I am originally-honeymooned there some 80 years ago! Even though we live a mere 18 miles away, I chose The Green Park to celebrate and surprise my husband. We were comfortable, enjoyed our stay, and will try the on location restaurant in the near future. To anyone considering a stay at the Green Park Inn, we say "GO". See how hotels were in the past, appreciate the history as well as the beautiful Blowing Rock area. And realize that these new owners are saving something that is in the category of "once lost, it is gone forever." Bistro127 is the one place that we head for when we are in Hickory which is at least once a week. The menu is different, delicious and made with fresh local quality produce where possible. That is important to us. The pizzas are different and superb. The service is good and they pay attention to any special needs. The whole atmosphere of this unique eating place is great. And we wish every success to Matt Miller and his wonderful staff.
