When your boiler has no pressure
A loss of water pressure is a good indicator of some common issues that arise with boilers. Low pressure is relatively easy to diagnose, as most boilers have a built-in pressure gauge. Sometimes, it’s possible to correct water pressure yourself

Understanding water pressure

Constant water pressure is essential to the efficient functioning of your boiler system. Pressure in most modern combination boilers is maintained by cold water flowing from the water mains supply through a mechanism known as the ‘filling loop’[1].

What causes a drop in pressure?

A number of things can cause pressure to drop. It may be that there is a leak somewhere in your boiler system. Or, if you bled your radiators recently, it may be that pressure was lost then.

However, you may not be able to tell that you have a problem until you check the pressure gauge. A water leak, for instance, may be tiny and go unnoticed at first, only to develop into a larger problem down the line.

Checking your pressure gauge

Check the water pressure gauge or indicator, which is typically on the front of your boiler. For most boilers, this should be set around the 1 bar. The position set when the boiler was installed is sometimes shown by a red indicator needle.

If you have noticed repeated drops in your boiler pressure, make sure you check the gauge regularly. A drop in pressure is a good indication that there is a problem with your boiler.

How to tackle lost pressure

Each boiler will come with specific instructions about its pressure system. Check your user manual to see if you can re-pressurise your boiler yourself.

POOR HOUSING INSULATION IS MAIN CAUSE OF HIGH HEATING COSTS
New research has revealed that Brits believe insufficient insulation, leading to heat bridges, is the primary cause of high heating costs.

Forty-two per cent of UK homeowners and renters believe their heating costs are high or very high and 27% are taking steps to reduce their energy bills this winter.

Heat bridges or heat leaks, even in new builds, caused by poor insulation are the main culprit for heat loss in homes, wasting energy and driving up costs. Thirty-three per cent of UK residents experience this in their homes. Additional causes for high costs include:

No optimum regulation of temperature in individual rooms (22%)
Outdated heaters (16%)
Personal negligence (16%)
The findings by reichelt elektronik suggest that smart heating solutions would be a beneficial solution, with thermostats to control heating systems in each room. Smart home technology allows users to adjust the heating in their home easily and remotely from a mobile device. This means, for example, if they forget to turn the heating off when they leave the house, it can be done from their smartphone.

Staying warm during the colder months and being able to afford the increase in energy bills is of particular concern, especially to older generations. Thirty-seven per cent have already taken measures to keep the bills down.

Improving insulation was the most popular course of action (46%), followed by renovating windows and/or doors (30%). Twenty-two per cent either have or are considering simpler solutions, such as installing smart heating technology, which has been proven to contribute to reduced heating costs. Forty-six per cent of Brits have reduced their bills with smart heating solutions.

Jan Pakusa, product manager for Power Supplies, Test and Measurement, said: “Homeowners can get the insulation of their property tested using thermal imaging cameras, which show exactly where the heat is escaping to the outside. Not only are signs of ageing responsible for escaping heat, such as cracks in the building, but insufficient insulation on roller shutters or doors can lead to unwanted heat loss, even in new buildings. This causes energy wastage and unwanted higher costs.
