High voices sing harmony for Olympic Beijing
( 2008-07-09 )

Rick Garson, chief curator of "Global Harmony" concert series, gives a speech at a press conference for the event in Beijing, July 8, 2008.

The world's top operatic singers are gearing up to make the Olympic host city of Beijing not only a Mecca for sports fans, but also a music hotspot.

Italian mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli, American soprano Renee Fleming, and Italian tenor Salvatore Licitra are among nine musicians due to perform in Beijing during the Olympics for the "Global Harmony" concert series, a press conference announced on Tuesday.

Rick Garson, chief curator of "Global Harmony," said he believed that the shows would offer a superb musical experience for people visiting Beijing during the Olympics.

The concerts will be held from August 7 to 17 in the Great Hall of the People and the Forbidden City Concert Hall. "The dates and the venues have been carefully selected to create a world-class cultural experience that seamlessly complements the Olympic sports events and their scheduling," said a press release on the event's Web site.

Other performers include sopranos Angela Gheorghiu and Sumi Jo, tenors Marcello Giordani, Ramon Vargas and Jonas Kaufmann, as well as baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky. Supporting them will be the China National Symphony Orchestra, led by world-renowned conductors Emmanuel Villaume and Nicola Luisotti.

Part of the concerts' proceeds will be used to help Sichuan earthquake survivors, the press conference said.

Swizz Beatz Grabs J. Lo, Wyclef, Chris Brown For U.N. Peace Track

Swizz Beatz was pleasantly surprised when he got the call to produce a myriad of tracks for Beyoncé’s recently released B’Day LP. But when he got the nod from reps working on a project associated with the United Nations to produce a star-studded song to promote peace, he was floored.

Swizz, fresh from a trip to Los Angeles, where he was producing Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Eve and Cassidy (see “Bone Thugs Dropping Two New LPs; Second Disc To Feature Dre, Kanye, Mariah” ), explained that he was tapped to helm a track for a peace campaign that will debut on September 21, the International Day of Peace.

“They picked me to be that person to make the song,” Swizz said. “It’s gonna be huge. They left it 100 million percent up to me.”

The U.N. established the International Day of Peace in 1981 and it was first celebrated in 1982. This year, the International Peace Concert, a show celebrating the message of the worldwide event, will take place December 9 at the Coliseum in Rome.

Swizz revealed that John Legend will appear on the track, titled “One Day,” and “we have confirmed participation from artists such as Marc Anthony, Eve, Cassidy, Wyclef and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony.” A publicist for the concert confirmed that Jennifer Lopez, Sean Paul, Chris Brown, Floetry, Lyfe Jennings and Mario will also perform on the song.

“One Day” will be performed at the International Peace Concert, which will commemorate the International Day of Peace’s 25th anniversary. The show will be televised live from Rome; complete details about the event were not available at press time.

“This is a global opportunity for celebrities, musicians and world leaders to reach out and communicate to the rest of world how we can all join together in the road towards peace,” Rick Garson of Garson Entertainment, the company producing the concert, said via a statement.

Swizz’s earliest plans for the song were a little vague: “It’s definitely slowed up,” he said earlier this month before going into the studio. “I might let the beginning be pretty and let the singers do their thing and switch the pitch and rock out.”

Days later, songwriter Sean Garrett was penning the lyrics and Swizz was working on the beat and reflecting on the significance of his task.

“Music, to me, is the number-one contender for unity,” he said during the session. “There are not many other factors that bring people together. I want people to be moved to bring about positive change, but I want [to make] the song that everyone can identify with, young or old. I have collaborated with Sean ‘The Pen’ Garrett to create a song that will unite all under one sound. It is a track that is positive, but that you can easily bump your head to.”

Swizz and Sean aren’t only collaborating on music for world peace — they are also teaming up for some big upcoming albums. “Sean is an incredible talent,” Swizz said (see “Sean ‘The Pen’ Garrett Might Keep Beyonce, Usher Hits For Himself” ), “and yes, he and I have formed a partnership to change the game. We have projects we are currently working on from J. Lo to Eve, Beyoncé to Cassidy.”

BARKA! BURKINA
In November 2008, ZZYX Entertainmennt and Stella Productions agreed to provide the editing services for co-directors Ina & Esu to edit together the past 4 years of video documentation in both the US and Burkina Faso. A total of $50,000 was donated as in-kind services for this endeavor.
Editing began on December 27, 2008 and culminated on February 14, 2009.
In March 2009, BARKA! BURKINA premiered in Official Competition at FESPACO, Africa’s largest film festival which happens to take place in Burkina Faso.

SEE THE TRAILER!
Length: 74 minutes
Written, directed & produced by Ina & Esu
Executive Producer: Rick Garson & Edwin Winfield, ZZYX Entertainment
Synopsis
BARKA! BURKINA is a love letter to the people of Burkina Faso. It traces the journey of Ina & Esu, co-founders of The BARKA Foundation, a non-profit organization based in the US and Burkina. Ina & Esu, two Americans, have been embraced by a small village, “Le Petit Village”, in eastern Burkina and are working to create connections between La Petite and communities in the US. This bridge-building between indigenous and western civilization is taking place between schools, youth, women and has UN and government support. Their approach is unique, heart-centered and guided by the belief that indigenous wisdomkeepers hold the missing ingredient in bringing balance to a global village that has lost its way. The overriding theme of the film is the co-creation of a “culture of peace” on the planet. To make that dream a practical reality, BARKA has created a consortium of organizations to develop a new paradigm for achieving the UN’s Millennium Development Goals in Burkina and has set the ambitious task of “Clean Water for All” as its first initiative. In Africa, water is a woman’s issue. Women walk for miles every day to carry water to their families. Making clean water accessible supports the empowerment of women. The film documents how this enormous undertaking is begun simply, with the small and significant step of joining in conversation with Burkinabe women to see how it would be possible to join hands and forge a new path toward our collective sustainability through combining modern and indigenous technologies. This is a true story of peace, water & wisdom, enacted with vision, passion and purpose. “Barka” is an African word of gratitude and blessing.
During the world premiere of BARKA! BURKINA at FESPACO 2009, the film received a 2nd screening at Salle CENASA, the only film within the Diaspora category to receive such an honor.
During the Peace, Water & Wisdom Concert & Festival, BARKA! BURKINA was screened commercially at 5 theatres in Ouagadougou.
