As a former high school teacher, I would never tolerate this behavior in my classroom...except this particular students message is right on track with what I believe. Our education system holds teachers back, forcing them to teach to the test rather than teaching to life, fear for their pay and job if the numbers don't match some meaningless statistic, and spend all their time dealing with pressure from their superiors for better scores that have no bearing on real life for their students, often time with no help from parents who see teachers as nothing more than overpaid babysitters. It's the whole reason why I chose not to renew my teaching certificate and move into higher education where I can make a difference to something other than the public schools standardized testing score. I got sick of teaching students how to work the system rather than apply their knowledge. I couldn't teach the math...I was teaching test taking techniques and I didn't sign up for that. And when I tried to teach the way I was taught before standardized testing, I was punished. I don't know this teacher or the whole situation, but I have seen too many teacher slip into the "packet" teaching simply because it is the only way they can meet some sort of metric on their production, which, when it comes down to it, doesn't mean squat to the success of their students. This teacher applauds this student. And I hope it is a wakeup call for the teacher and all other teachers. Afterall, these kids are going to be running our country someday.
