Strategic thinking for a sustainable (and beautiful) future? Yes please!
Peter Rose + Partners's master plan for Bishop's University in Sherbrooke, Quebec, is a three-phase, forty-year road map for responsible stewardship of the campus’s natural beauty -- and it presents the very feasible opportunity for Bishop’s University to become a Carbon Zero campus.

Peter Rose + Partners's reimagining of the Montréal waterfront at Old Port resurrected the site’s urban history as a bustling industrial port while creating a new promenade and flexible space for programming. In keeping with this ethos, you can now visit Old Port to see two scenes from Cité Mémoire, a public art project that presents stories based on Montréal’s rich history.

"Looking at the larger picture I would say that I play with and against type; I critique and at the same time I am attracted to typological pieces. I don't make object-buildings. For me everything starts with a connection to type and place. I have only lately understood this. And I can see following this path more consciously in the future - stretching my sense of how far I can go and still hold to a frame of reference. My way of dealing with history, perhaps?"

What do you do when you want to convert a historic building steps away from the Louvre into a modern, industrial cultural center, featuring galleries, cafe, and gathering spaces?

You turn to +Peter Rose + Partners.
Two blocks from the Louvre museum in Paris, Le Laboratoire required the transformation of the historic Parisian urban fabric into a modern industrial loft to house an art and science cultural science center. Accommodating existing construction dating from the past several centuries, the project carved, from stone and cast iron, spaces for the exhibition and creation of works about the intersection of science and art.

The project uncovers an existing glass block floor to bring atrium light into gallery and gathering space. The existing atrium at entry level is reclaimed as a circulation node, allowing access to office space, newly created street level retail, and the cultural center entry. Moving into Le Laboratoire, a stair is cut through three levels, creating and connecting display, meeting, and entertainment spaces.

Thoughtful, sustainable design + absurd ROI = very good architecture, indeed.

"I think that this building will not look modern at first glance. In fact, it is intentionally set up in such a way that it will recede a little. The building will create opportunities in the landscape for movement and for vistas. In some ways it will knit things together. but if you look carefully, you will recognize that it is contemporary in its detail and its materials. How the building is made will reveal its time and its respect for craft."
