Did you know that hearing loss and dementia have been linked in numerous studies?

The study shared in the article below points to the necessity for physicians and other healthcare providers to assess the auditory status of their patients and consider its potential effect on the diagnosis of dementia.

This is one of the many reasons that it is so important to take care of your hearing and get your hearing loss treated as soon as you start to notice a decline!

With the Olympics in full swing we wanted to share an article we came across about how sound data and hearing can actually help swimmers enhance performance.
Very fascinating new technology and research, maybe someday we may know more about how this type of system could work for people with hearing impairment and hearing aid technology.

The most obvious benefit of amplification is improved audibility leading to decreased impairment, activity limitation, and participation restriction—what the World Health Organization (WHO) defines as disability. Hearing aids also appear to have “not so obvious” benefits.
In recent years, for example, an increasing number of studies have investigated the relationship between hearing loss and depression, including the potentially positive contribution of professional hearing care.

According to the research team, we are all born polyglots–able to differentiate all sounds in all languages–but over time we start to focus on the sounds of our native language, in effect ‘tuning’ our ears to a narrow set of frequencies, at the expense of others.
This makes it harder to learn a foreign language as an adult, since it is not just a case of buckling down and learning the grammar, but of a physiological hurdle that prevents us from adequately distinguishing the new language’s full range of sounds.

Research from the HEARing Cooperative Research Centre #HEARingCRC in Australia has revealed that infants with hearing loss who are fitted with hearing aids and #cochlear implants as soon as possible have better #language and #learning abilities.

This research puts into action the “Childhood #Hearing Loss” theme of the #WorldHealth Organization’s March 3, 2016 World Hearing Day, also known as International Ear Care Day.

Did you see the double rainbow yesterday?
Double Rainbow over Portland
Spring blew into Portland yesterday with an onslaught of seriously heavy rain squalls.  But all the stormy weather was quickly forgotten when I looked up and saw this beautiful double rainbow arching over my dear city! Happy Spring!
